1990 Legacy L 2wd wagon 4 spd auto Philadelphia

Hi,

Our Legacy is still here. I hate to sell it to the junkyard if anyone at legacycentral can get some good out of it.
Still runs fine, but has rust in the undercarriage structure.
All offers and suggestions cheerfully considered.

Re: ATF Pump Leak

Hi again, I found this wonderful picture of transmission and pump, apart. The circled areas indicate where my leak is. Fluid flows through the holes from pump to transmission and back. The leak is happening at the point closest to the outside. Oil travels across 10mm of gasket to get out. The path d...

Re: ATF Pump Leak

I cleaned and rinsed the area in question. Ran engine to ensure the fluid wasn't running from above. Drained, removed pan, and looked closely this time. There is a 30mm by 0.4mm channel cut across the transmission edge that mates with the fluid pump. Fluid is coming out here. Sadly reminiscent of th...

Re: ATF Pump Leak

Yes. I have put things back together, replaced fluid, run and watched leak. I replaced "O" rings on test plugs, and leak is the joint between oil pump and AT, or pan gasket. As it only leaks when running, must be joint. The pan overlaps the joint, so I can't actually see the atf drip out, ...

ATF Pump Leak

1990 Subaru Legacy FWD wagon. I have a heavy leak - 2 quarts per day of driving. No leak when not running. Close examination indicated leak at front, bottom of transmission (under pump slice). Was not dripping down from above. There are two square (~4mm) headed plugs, with a machined hole between. L...

Re: Non-turbo 90 Legacy wagon overheating

I agree. I'm thinking about using a can of sealant. Any experiences? (Good or Bad) I'd like to eliminate a radiator leak as a possibility. But if it fails a pressure test, couldn't it just be because there is a leak in the head gasket? ( as opposed to a leak in the radiator, pump, hoses, etc.?) Woul...

Re: Non-turbo 90 Legacy wagon overheating

Thanks for the help Josh. The thermostat is a Stant #48457. As mentioned, currently have no thermostat installed. Have used the bleeder screw. Yesterday, after a 25-mile, 1-hour trip I added 300 mL of coolant to fill radiator. As traffic changed, the temperature gauge ran up and down, but never came...

Non-turbo 90 Legacy wagon overheating

(Earlier years - Replaced radiator, water pump, timing belt..) Pre-19th - Noticed coolant was disappearing. Added coolant to both radiator & OF tank. Started carrying extra coolant in car. August 19 - After several hours of driving and cooling down, on the way home car over-heated, emptied out t...

Re: Timing Belt Tensioner Bracket

For those waiting with bated breath to see what stupid things I did next, here's an update. Both Tensioner brackets arrived. I installed the one without the ear. 90% thru re-assembly I started and ran the engine for 8 seconds, and pumped 350mL of AT fluid onto the street. The white lines on the belt...

Re: Timing Belt Tensioner Bracket

Yeah, that sunk in last night sometime. I ( of course) already have new idlers and a belt, so it would make no sense to change styles now. I've ordered two used parts on/off/from ebay, one with an ear, the other not. Neither says they are compatible with my 90 Legacy. But of the twenty or so I looke...

Re: Any laptop or LCD screen gurus out there

Mine did same thing. It had a video out /monitor port so I was able to connect it to an old monitor and determine it was just the display. Later found it was the inverter.
Inverter was cheaper than the backlight.

Timing Belt Tensioner Bracket

Hi, I have a 90 Legacy wagon. Three years ago I replaced just the water pump. Then the upper left idler went so I replaced the two left idlers, and of course the belt. Now the lower right (sprocket) idler died. So I'm replacing it and the tensioner idler, and, of course, the belt. The bolt for the t...

Re: wtf? Wonky electrical problem

I appropriated the term "death spiral" from another discipline (aviation, I think). What I was referring to was heat, not metal fatigue. The connection generates more heat than it can dissipate at ambient temperature (through conduction, usually), and its temperature rises until dissipatio...

Re: wtf? Wonky electrical problem

You are fortunate in that you have wide-spread failure! That will make finding the fault easier. Seriously, don't get too bogged down by the schematics - the problem is something significant - not some tiny out-of-tolerance condition. Turn the ignition to Acc or On; with the radio and wipers switche...

Re: Timing Belt Idler Bolt Length

Thanks

I just ordered a couple idlers, so I'll wait 'til they arrive.

Too much ado over a bolt, but I thought my post might ring a bell with someone who could just say "order this one".

Thanks again,

D

Re: Timing Belt Idler Bolt Length

Didn't make my self clear enough (especially the "The old idler is 0.59 inches thick," part). All pulleys are 35 mm wide, but the bolt is recessed into pulley. Pulley comprises: thin-wall outer cylinder, two ring bearings, and solid inner cylinder with thru hole for bolt passage. This inne...

Re: wtf? Wonky electrical problem

I didn't finish, but my ramblings indicate the ignition switch, or the line to it which supplies 12 volt power. According to my schematic, a connector named B63 mates with ignition switch. It carries lines which feed the dead devices. It also has 2 lines that go to the main fuse box. Tracing back to...

Re: wtf? Wonky electrical problem

Hi, Someone with experience with this problem will hopefully answer you soon. But from my 1990 wagon manual: Main fusebox (M/B) is under the hood, between battery and wiper fluid. Other fusebox is in passenger space, on the left sidewall below the side mirror control. There is a light (that comes on...

Timing Belt Idler Bolt Length

Hi, I am replacing an idler pulley (Passenger/Right Side-Upper) that failed. From pictures of pulleys for sale, it appears I might also need a new, shorter bolt. The existing bolt, when screwed alone into the block, leaves 0.40 inch space; engine-to-bolt-head underside. The old idler is 0.59 inches ...

Datum Points

Hi I have a question regarding datum points, and the only topic mentioning them was in the Picture Gallery; hence a new topic. I have the FSM (for a '90 Legacy wagon), and it has drawings of and distances between the "Datum Points" (Master Repair Locators, Guide Holes, Locators, and Indent...

Re-built axle; what's included?

Hi, We have a 1990 Legacy wagon that is beginning to need some attention. I have found answers here to many of my questions. At times I've felt a great (demented?) sense of kinship when reading other's exploits that so closely match my own: e.g., replacing or adjusting anything will often cause the ...
