hey man, thanks... but i've already got a new pan and seals coming in.... i plan to take the car in for alignment (less sheetmetal) and see if it is worth messing with. if it is, the car is rusting in my backyard until they fork over enough money to rebuild it. it's 110 F in my shop and i'm pretty f...

Re: need to get tricky.

no, it's a rheostat. basically an arched coil with a contact that sweeps across the coil making the coil longer or shorter. the guy i was referring to did it to a z31 (300zx) as a "get me by". The CHTS is buried in a 300zx, and takes a fair amount of time to change out (speaking from exper...

all those parts are still available individually. along with a couple header flange gaskets, cost was $134.58. that's surprisingly inexpensive considering OE stuff.... still not sure what the gasket in the corner does. the parts guy didn't know either. i still plan to kill the kid, but just a little...

i've seen guys put a variable resistor in place of the coolant temp sensor. you just dial it up to whatever resistance/temperature you want. this does work, but is a hack job if you ask me....

Re: How low can you go? water temps

these cars are purpose engineered to run at a certain temp. deviating from the design doesn't make any sense and will most certainly cost in efficiency and power unless other items are modified to compensate. in the old days, everyone thought a 160 degree thermostat was the sure way to lower combust...

The stuff I use I get at NAPA and its more like a solvent that you let it idle with in the iol for a few minutes before draining, always amazes me what comes out after doing that. Engine flush is solvent and is HIGH RISK!!! I've pesonally witnessed the aftermath of an "engine flush"...

Re: DIY HELP! - '92 EJ22 waterpump, oil pump, and cam seals?

i don't remember how deep i set the cam seals. i usually just note the original depth and reinstall to that level. did you set them flush with the bore face or deeper to the end of the lead-in chamfer? how did you get the seals out? a lot of mfrs suggest prying these out, but that always worrys me s...

Re: ticking from motor

Hydraulic lash adjuster are the same thing as valve lifters, except these operate directly between the valve stem and rocker arm instead of between a cam lobe and a push rod. Subaru likes these little guys because they save valve train weight and are inexpensive by comparison. To determine if hydrau...

Re: DIY HELP! - '92 EJ22 waterpump, oil pump, and cam seals?

Timing Belt Replacement Tips: 1. put a piece of cardboard in front of the a/c condensor to prevent an "opps" to the cooling fins. 2. loosen cam sprocket screws while cam belt is still on, same for crank pulley screw. 3. crank sprocket just slides off unless rusted.. grab it and wiggle whil...

took the radio out of the '90 today. it is a matsushita. disassembled the chassis, removed the faceplate and controls board. the board plugs into the main board as does a secondary board. the volume, bass, and fader knobs are all ALPS brand pots. none were loose. i then checked the soldered pins for...

yeah, that makes sense. not sure if it was the ball joint arm or not... i remember the tie rod arm and some other part of the knuckle. don't remember which part, but it stood straight up when shimmed and pressure applied to the wheel hub shaft. was very stable. i'm sure that is what you used as it i...

Re: 1990 - 1994 Subaru Legacy Front Wheel Bearing Replacemen

to press out the wheel hub (and outer race), i did the same thing as you. stood the knuckle up on the tie rod arm and the part that connects to the strut. i had to use a spacer to level bore relative to the press cylinder (one of the plates that came with your press works just fine). i am so happy t...

here's a thought... you didn't find any metal in the trans pan, and there was a knocking noise from the front of the transmssion. you heard a bang and it would go forward but drag, and in reverse it would lock up.... this sounds as if the differential spider gear shaft has come loose, slid partly ou...

fifth gear.... i suspected there may be more to the turbo, than just some extra friction discs... i come from gm land and run 200-4R trans (v8 240z), but only certain codes. some codes are a completely different valve body, accumulators, centrifugal weights, etc. i don't know for certain, but it may...
