Re: 1994 legacy (wagon) headunit wiring

Most of us on this board are familiar mostly with North American models. Hopefully some of the information is relevant though. All Subarus sold here around 1994 have radio wiring that looks like one of these two: http://surrealmirage.com/vrg3/bcstereo/ -or- http://northursalia.com/modifications/misc...

Re: Turbo to NA conversion

Yeah, the NA ECU won't care. Like Steve says, you can unplug them, but do something to protect the connectors so they don't get ruined.

And, yes, the dropping resistor is only for automatics, so you can remove that too.

Re: Crankshaft Pulley Wobble

You'll be able to tell when you pull the pulley off. There's a woodruff key that locates the pulley. If it's chewed up, then it won't be able to hold the new pulley in place.

In my experience, cheap rotors are fine and cheap ceramic pads are at least as good as stock semimetallic pads.

Re: I have a brake dilemma...

Definitely don't downgrade -- the stock turbo brakes are barely good enough as it is. You can get a cheap set of turbo rotors and pads brand new online for less than $100 shipped. Look at Rock Auto or World Auto Parts or All Foreign. Also, the rears aren't the same. Turbo rear brake rotors are venti...

Re: Coolant issue

It's hard to say for sure what the cause is. Turning on the air conditioning (assuming that's what you mean by "cab air") is masking the problem by bumping engine speed up a little. The alternator spins faster so it provides more juice to the radiator fans, which then spin faster. Also, th...

Re: GL-5 Gear Oil for FWD Manual Transaxle?

I believe Subaru specifies any ethylene glycol coolant that doesn't contain any silicates or phosphates. If I remember correctly, the standard Advance Auto Parts brand coolant meets these requirements. Silicates and phosphates are actually supposed to be protective for aluminum engines. The issue is...

Re: Turbo to NA conversion

Yes, like Josh says, use the 93 NA ECU, use a black-plastic-bodied JECS MAF sensor, and use your car's stock wiring. That means removing the harness from under the intake manifold of the turbo engine and putting it on the non-turbo engine. And Bosco's right -- the turbo and non-turbo water manifolds...

Re: GL-5 Gear Oil for FWD Manual Transaxle?

Delvac looks like pretty good stuff. Redline 75W90NS is another option. It supposedly is formulated specifically to meet GL-5 requirements but also work well with synchronizers. I used it for a while and it worked pretty well in my experience. It made for easier shifts than ShockProof but not quite ...

Re: GL-5 Gear Oil for FWD Manual Transaxle?

There is no FWD versus AWD issue here. The GL-5 requirement for Subaru transmissions has to do with the hypoid gears in the front differential. I wrote a pretty thorough explanation here: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?start=50&t=815#p141872 At the end of that writeup I mention that ...

Re: Turbo to NA conversion

You can probably get away with switching just the (+) wires for the cam and crank sensors. I believe the (-) and shield pins go to the same place inside the ECU's case anyway. The big issue with using the turbo radiator is that there's no radiator cap. The easiest thing, in my opinion, would be to c...

Re: Alarm causing a parasitic draw

Not that this is gonna help you, but for completeness' sake -- Like 91Beater says, 30 milliamps isn't a big deal. The usual rule of thumb is that anything less than 40 mA is fine. The fact that you heard clicking when you plugged/unplugged the alarm makes me think something's getting constant power ...

There's also the connector under the back seat that goes bad. Another board member just had this issue: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=49622

Re: RHD swao wiring

The wiring diagrams in the factory service manual are quite good; you might try to get your hands on that. What you want is section 6 of the 92 Legacy manual. Section 6 is the electrical section and very little changed from 92 to 93. The part number is MSA5T9209A.

Re: Which online dealer will sell cut keys?

Locksmiths can't read the key code, but they can read the bitting code. The key code is a number that Subaru has recorded and can look up by VIN is a number (like, say, 3287) that a locksmith can look up in a giant book or something to get the bitting code. The bitting code says what the actual cuts...

Re: engine wont come away from gearbox?

Clip the throwout bearing into the pressure plate. Don't install the spindle until the engine and transmission are mated together. Leave the fork in there; it'll be loose. As you slide the engine and transmission back together, you can pull up on the fork and slide it into the throwout bearing. Then...

On first-generation Legacies, I don't believe the ABS system knows or cares that the transmission is swapped. I don't know what the deal is with your 96 model though.

Re: Coolant Issue

Well, bubbling out of the overflow tank is either a sign of overheating (if the bubbles are boiling coolant) or a leaking head gasket (if the bubbles are combustion gases). If the bubbling has stopped, I'd say you're okay though. With whatever gauge you end up using, I would say to definitely run a ...
