You think oil leak is unrelated to completely lumpy running? (Maybe)

And can the valve cover really leak that much? Sorry these are my first boxers.

And, last, are the valve cover gaskets available on their own?

Thanks as alway, guys.

EJ22T peeing oil onto manifold

OK - I know this is the dumbest type of question. I'm really asking for thoughts before the surgery begins: Bought the pretty good 91 SS 4EAT for laughably little on the basis that it's peeing oil from the right hand head area onto the manifold. Now I have it on the street in from of my place and I ...

Heh. Sorry to put an Evo on your radar. For what it's worth I had the Legacy there as well and planned to run it but we needed to shake down some cooling system mods on the Mits. Also I like driving it. FTD was the icing on the cake.... ACP 1990 LS 5MT (15,000 miles in the last 6mos) 1991 SS 4EAT (j...

Unfortunately you're dealing with two of the main institutions in society who are accustomed to screwing uninformed clients: mechanics and insurers. It may take weeks off your lifespan, but if you're ready for it, put the screws to them. You'll need time on your hands unless you want to hire the thi...

That's not a trivial piece of metal. Let me put it this way: if it were to go in our rally car, we'd strip it after seeing the metal. If it were in my street car I'd drive it until it failed or miraculously didn't. If it were for a transplant into a street car I'd split it open since it's out anyway.

Missed this thread for some reason. Here's the gearbox skinny: First thing to always remember: All your forward gears are always in constant mesh. When you shift, you don't cause gears to run into each other. You cause them to lock onto the shaft that otherwise they would spine freely on. You lock t...

The problem is that the spring doesn't return the valve to a closed position quickly enough. Although the cam lobe pulls itself out of the way in time, the rocker stays in contact with the valve stem even while the cam lifts off the rocker at the other end. If the rocker is longer, it's heavier, and...

I KNEW I could count on you guys. The Turbo actually looks pretty good. Better body than my N/A but i haven't looked underneath yet. 1. But he's talking about a valve noise, though. How concerned should I be?? I've read some of the lifter problem threads. What fails? 2. Can you swap the front ratio ...

Merging 1990 N/A 5MT with 1991 SS EAT

OK - I've been searching on the forums for this particular info but I can't really find it. You may recall I have my lovely little 1990 5MT N/A. Now I can get a 1991 4EAT Turbo. But of course I want a 5MT Turbo. So here's what I believe, but need confirmed: 1. My N/A is a 4.11 with open rear diff an...

I'm not sure anyone has really hit this question on the head. Basically, you want more valves per cylinder in order to improve head breathing. In order to maintain proper valve angle and cylinder dome, the valve stems go off the top of the engine at an angle away from each other. In order to articul...

Help me understand sube brake evolution

Wellllll, thought of that, but I've never seen an engine limp then self-correct with a piston problem. I did probably 3000 miles (in a month) beween the limps. I thought maybe a cracked ring that separates and comes back together, or possibly a sticky valve. The former might explain the blue smoke w...

Wacky oil consumption, and rare dropping to 3 cylinders

Anyone able to help with these? 1. Most of the time my 1990 2.2 Legacy AWD 5MT consumes very very little oil. Like I changed it and more than 2000 miles later it was still on the full mark. But then occasionally, over a single tank of fuel, it will go from full to essentially empty. What's up? There...

Not really that bad. Use a socket and extension to carefully hold the bolt in the new solenoid as you feed it below the intake. Took me about 20 mins.

Oh, on a turbo it's a PITA.

Ah. Good advice, then. The Haynes manual says to use sealant but in practice I will defer to you that the washer will suffice. Cool. So to speak.

Ummm, I know this is a basic question but I searched and found nothing. If the rear top mounts are for the GC8 impreza then they should bolt right in to the Legacy rear strut towers. What we in NorthAm call a WRX begins in the bugeye headlight era, and those top mounts won't fit, but an adaptor is available from DMS in Australia. Other than that it should be bolt in, bu...

Ha! By George I think you've got it! Yes - CEL is not on at all, but.... Cold starting is as though there's not choke: revs and dies, revs and dies, pendulum swinging. Have to keep my foot a little in the throttle for 30s until it stabilizes. Probably the temp sensor?! PMed you to buy yours. Thanks....

AH - I looked at the old struts and now I see: the washer goes wide side down between the top spring carrier and the top mount. That's the part I wasnot getting. The reason it's hard to turn is that the spring is not putting all its load on the center race, but on the whole top mount bearing. It doe...

Sketchy?

That wagon looks weird, but the uneven/even drop is not being addressed properly. A car raked further forward will tend more toward oversteer, and back to understeer. You're effectively moving the cg slightly. Suspension geometry of a particular car will determine what raking does to the roll center...
