Confirm: it was the solenoid purge valve
Replaced it with a new one and no CEL any more. Also cleared the codes and am left with only one: 21 temp sensor. Does this mean the fans will run all the time? They don't seem to so maybe it's an intermittent connection. Also the temp guage behaves normally, but perhaps that runs off a seperate sen...

Ummm, embarrassingly we wanted to get the top mounts off and didn't have a spring compressor so we undid the top bolt with the struts still in the car and lowered the shock out of the spring that way, but in the process the washer just fell out. No idea which way it was in. Isn't this in a FSM somew...

Alignment: I marked the bolts before removing them and the steering wheel is on the same angle as before, which is to say if there's any error it's at least equal on both sides! I plan to realign, but I play with alignment a lot on the rally car (toe out on ice etc) and this isn't an alignment probl...

Completed WRX struts into 1990 Legacy AWD
Put the WRX take-offs into the 1990 Legacy yesterday. Not too difficult - used a Dremel tool to cut the brake hose brackets and bent them out of the way and worked fine. On the rears the original spring clips held the hoses on to the WRX struts. On the front I just used a couple of strong zip ties o...

Re: How to protect tires when storing a car?
Yeah. over-inflate. Change positions sometimes if you can. I was just curious which way to go with pressure since I'd heard both. I've also heard that it's a lot less of a problem these days with radial tires. The only car I've seen flatspotting happen to is my brother's Supra and I think the tires ...

FYI I found that I only needed the spring compressor for the fronts - the rears you can basically push on far enough to start the threads and then hit with an impact gun. Definitely need it for the fronts, though. And you get what you pay for with spring compressors. I use one of these: http://www.h...

Help me with OBD1 function and meaning...
Bit of a story to this one; 1990 Legacy 5MT LS sedan 1. Bought the car a few months ago and check engine light (CEL) was coming on intermittently but engine running fine except for pendulum effect on cold idle that goes away after a couple of minutes (although sometimes sufficiently serious that you...

need 15" alloys
I need 5 or 6 alloys like this exactly - a bit beat up (or good and cheap). Are you (or anyone else) interested in selling?tonflo wrote:I've got 6 15" alloys (4 peeling, 2 chewed up on lip) if you're interested. Try a 205-50-15 sometime. Handles a lot better.

Sorry to be an idiot: what's the difference between BC, BF..
...and what is my 1990 Legacy AWD LS 5MT? BF5? Was the JDM Legacy at the time and in 1991 a different body, and will body parts fit? I know the USDM 1992-93 had a different nose. What's that body called? Ask me about anything mechanical and I'll go on all day; anything body? I know noooothing. ACP w...

WRX-Legacy strut top adaptors
DMS makes a set of adapters to mount WRX struts to the early legacy body - I think they just change the offset - neat little pieces - I just got two of them but haven't mounted them up yet. Contact Mark Moore at DMS North America http://dmsnorthamerica.com or 877-568-3121 and tell them ACP sent you ...

Yes, it's possible for it to fail intermittently. But are you sure you measured no resistance? Or do you mean no conductivity? AH - of course you're right. I meant that when I first tested it there was infinite resistance! Same for the donor car's solenoid. Guess new is the smartest option. I hate ...

Sourcing engine parts, and this original thread
I'm getting an intermittent CEL and OBD for code 35 Purge Solenoid. But I pulled it and tested it and resistance across it is about 70 ohms, but when I initially checked it there was no resistance. The leads to it show 12V with the ignition on. I pulled a solenoid from a donor car but it showed no r...

you only need top mounts for the rear The 2.5RS/gc8 spring strut combo works for sure. Dunno about the wrx though. I know the strut bars have different mounting which means different top mounts, so I dunno how it comes in concact with the strut itself. OK I bought the struts and springs from a 2002...

I'm asking too...
...but will they fit a 1990 Legacy sedan AWD ABS? I can't find info on suspension differences (although the spring rate sticky is very useful!).

Quarter inch?
Hmmm. Interesting. thanks for the intelligent replies. But I still think we need to investigate the tolerance more closely. Only a novice engineer would design a diff that couldn't tolerate 1/32 inch of tread-depth difference on a real-world car without failing. There has to be a tolerance. Further,...

Calculations
Just for fun(!) I did the math and get 634.5mm circumference for the 195s and 627 for the 205s. That 17.5mm difference translates into one extra revolution for the 205s for every 84 revolutions of the 195s, or 1576 revolutions per km for the 195s, and 1595 for the 205s, or 19 extra revolutions per k...
