Re: Engine information- EJ20

Let's get this out there: there's 3 cars the EJ20G was offered in. The Legacy, Impreza's, and Forester. The former two are largely compatible with each other and our stock ECU plugs, and all the plugs on the engine sensors are the same, and have the 90* Turbo inlets. The Forester version is a later ...

Re: Direct Upgrade replacement for OEM Diverter/Bypass Valve

You guys have me pretty sold that it's safe to try. But I'm just not a huge fan of the compressor surge. Maybe I need to hear it in person to really get a feel for it.

Re: Direct Upgrade replacement for OEM Diverter/Bypass Valve

That's intriguing. I've always heard compressor surge was bad. I even avoided a complete steal of a deal on a Neon SRT-4 once because I assumed the owner was a dumbass when he told me that he removed the BOV because you don't need it. It was a Neon though, so I don't regret missing that boat, lol. B...

Re: Engine choices

I'd recommend reading about the different phase-I JDM motors. There's like 4 that are commonly used (and some others less commonly used), and install considerations vary greatly between them. Kimo's was a Forester EJ20G I believe. The WRX EJ20G (93-95) is probably the most straight-forward, but ther...

Re: Engine choices

I assume by JDM 2.0L you mean the 93-96 WRX EJ20G? That swap is fairly straightforward following the available guides and with the robtune makes entirely too much power the stock TW/SS suspension and brakes. I have it and love it. The 230hp Forester I'm driving at the moment feels like a slug with a...

Re: Direct Upgrade replacement for OEM Diverter/Bypass Valve

I plan on getting one when I get my car out of storage (like a year and a half from now :-(). If for no other reason than OEM ones with a diaphram intact enough to handle 18psi becoming harder and harder to come by. Not so sure I want/need the different springs, but the option is always nice I suppo...

I'd be surprised if anyone that doesn't have a 100% stock setup is using the variable pump speed. Most AWIC guys don't want their pumps running slower than they need to be.

Re: Idea to stage a 4EAT to 5mt swap

Now that I think about it, there won't be connectors for the clutch switch on the AT harness if I recall. I believe I jumped the pins at the trans so it starts with the clutch engaged. The only real downside is the cruise won't disengage when you press the clutch.

Re: Idea to stage a 4EAT to 5mt swap

The button that releases that switch is just the brake light switch, its there on the manual cars too and will function the same if you don't change the wiring of the shift lock system while you're down there. Otherwise, I see no issue with this. Other than a clutch pedal that will sit at the floor ...

Re: thoughts on e10 fuel

Ethanol has lower energy density, and so produces less force per combustion than pure petroleum gas. More fuel must be injected to make up the difference (hence the lower fuel economy). Also, I'm 99.8% sure companies that sell E10+ mix the fuel such that you don't see the octane benefit of the ethan...

That's actually much, cheaper than what you'll pay for a new Samco brand, about half the price.

I'd steer clear of nameless eBay junk if you're tired of fixing rust/cracks. That's what cheap headers do. Keep fixing yours and save up for some name brand ones and read reviews of them to make sure they have a reputation for lasting. Or seek out stock manifolds, IIRC some of the late EJ25s had tub...

I'd caution that piecing together and installing an AWIC is not necessarily easier than installing a hood scoop. But the lack of need for a large scoop is nice.

I thought from the pics it was a whole new bezel as well. if it turns out he wants to do stuff for us, i'll jump on a new speedo and tach in a heartbeat. It would be really nice to have the redzone in the right spot for my engine. And some modernized colors wouldnt hurt either to match whats availab...

That's pretty bad ass! I wonder how many he'd need to sell to justify the setup cost for our application. That's typically the show stopper on custom stuff for our cars :-/

I've used the Severe Gear, its pretty decent. Also used Suby Certified Gear Oil (replaced Extra-S, new formula from new supplier, and was still sold as Extra-S many places last I checked). I can't say one is better than the other.

Re: Re-built 5MT vs. 6MT wap

The viscous center differential doesn't vary it's locking action at all. It will always aggressively apply the same amount of lock when the front and rear wheels turn different speeds, regardless of whether you're flying straight through a mud hole at 80mph, or trying to parallel park your car. The ...

There's some great info here. I was looking at the K-Sports once upon a time (before I knew I was coming to Japan and putting my car in long term storage), and was enticed by what they offered. I'll be really interested to hear how these work out for you.

Re: Koyo & Mishimoto Radiator Failures!!! (Legacy Turbo Mode

I can't say if it's as good as OEM, but my cheap Autozone radiator in my Touring Wagon was still in great shape after 6 or so years of hooning and quite a few autocross events. Whether it's worth it I guess would depend on how much the OEM one costs. I wouldn't consider the radiator a critical part ...

Re: Enduring Solutions ECU board and why you should buy it

I had 2 EJ20G ECU's, ran both untuned prior to going robtune, and both acted just fine in the cold. None of that "cold blooded" stuff I hear about. I can't remember offhand which specific ones they were, one was off a WRX wagon and the other a WRX sedan. No Z4 or anything super aggressive....

Have you read Josh's swap writeup? It goes over wiring up the reverse lights and neutral switch. The neutral switch stops the car from starting without the clutch pressed and also shuts off the cruise control when the clutch is pressed. Its not needed by any means but is a good idea. http://www.surr...

I saw no noticeable mileage difference between stock, open downpipe, and full 3" turbo-back on my Touring Wagon. Although I noticed I was driving more aggressively more frequently with the open downpipe, which dropped mileage on certain fillups :)
