Re: bad alternator = hard starts?

Did the battery sit without charge or did it get heavily discharged? Lead acid batteries, unless deep cycle and even then, do not tolerate sitting dead. Even a day sitting dead can be enough to kill it. They are used because they are cheap, handle temperature ranges reasonably well, and can punch a ...

Re: What's the point of motorized manual HVAC control?

But no A/C, probably. My no A/C cars had recirc, too. I'm not really sure why it's so common to run the A/C with it if the car is so equipped, though. I actually like the sound of the HVAC. It sounds like a machine doing work, which is what it is. But I know I'm weird, I also like the notchy shifter...

Re: What's the point of motorized manual HVAC control?

It's because of the effort to pull the cable, the design of the HVAC controls is more limited in termes of looks and ergonomics, it's a matter of following the industry to look current (manual controls would have been criticized for seeming outdated vs. the competition and Subaru was trying to move ...

I echo the above. Limp home mode from a knock sensor fault will be noticeably bad mileage.

Re: Problems with the Ignition Switch (parasitic draw)

Yes, as Diesel Devil said. When I went from one GL to another, I stupidly had the old key still on my chain. Tried to start the car with it and it went as far as turning the coil on, but wouldn't engage the starter (I wrote this into my first book, but as the character stealing the car) and when it ...

Re: My 1st Legacy story. (Pics)

I'm not a fan of the steering wheel's color, but an aftermarket wheel like that definitely makes it much better to drive. It's like taking off the 2 condoms and the Romney endorsed chastity pajamas you'd been having to wear until then.

Re: bad alternator = hard starts?

Yes. The battery should only really start the car. The rest of the time, it's kept charged by the alternator, which also runs the electrical. A weak or repeatedly discharged battery can also kill an alternator prematurely as well as a bad alternator killing a battery by either overcharging it or mak...

Awesome! I'd like to treat the Focus before it ages and the Legacy, if I ever do anything with it, so i don't have to weld new lenses in over the projectors again.

Re: What did you do to your Subie today?

A spoiler won't necessarily get you worse mileage. It depends on the airflow/vehicle speed. The spoiler could help airflow reattachment off the roof (especially where the trunks on these are pretty low) on the sedan and angled down slightly on the wagon could reduce wake drag by easing the transitio...

Re: CVT

My sister has a 2011 Rogue (in black, aren't they all?) and nope. My brother-in-law's Civic Hybrid is the worst though. That's just a horrible, gutless drivetrain top to bottom and only averages maybe 5 mpg more than my 5-speed Focus rated at 36 highway. The good news is though, that I read Chevy wa...

I think the Turbo stickers are great! Old school and the truth hiding in plain site. Most people would think it was the just the stock 115 HP unit. It's like a wolf dressed like a sheep dressed like a wolf. Or maybe it's a sheep from that awesome horror movie, Black Sheep or it's a wolf . . . with a...

Re: CVT

The problem is with high torque applications. Nissan rushed the CVT to market attached to a V6 a year after I was reading about the engineering challenges of making them work with anything over 1 liter. Consequently, dealers could line up Muranos with shot transmissions around the block. I imagine (...

They also don't make the shell. Would be kind of hard without that. IIRC, BMW reissued the 2002 shell and has all the parts to build one new. Granted, it's BMW, but it's also a simple car, and I can't remember, but I think it cost over $50k to build one new. The block might have been an old one, too...

Re: 1986 Subaru GL-10 Leone TURBO

Yeah, one trick I used was to blast the high pressure hose at the base of the fender behind the front wheels until the water coming out by the door stopped coming out with sand in it. I spent more time on the undercarriage and wheel wells than the top side and the car is in remarkably good shape rus...

If there's a lot of drama going on in his family, it's understandable that this kind of small, non-money-making venture would be far back burnered or forgotten about entirely. They don't use salt around here, either. They use sand, which is a lot better (I went to school in Detroit, so I could see the difference first hand as well as gain an appreciation for a state inspection process that I had seen as an annoyance until then), but still doesn't get along with steel. Und...

Yeah, if anything, you'll need to keep some sticky rubber on it to prevent it from locking up too much. Oh, and to use all that power to move rather than make smoke. I don't think brake fade would be a problem with so little weight, either. It's amazing how good that looks. It looks like you're buil...
