On a more technical "how does this work" note, the Subaru ECU has a "Load" variable that is calculated off of the MAF flow and a few other things. The fuel, timing, boost tables are scaled by load and RPM. So as the amount of load (airflow) changes, fuel and timing change as well...

It's not very user friendly. The PDF is the only manual they have. The software feels like a half-done CS project. The control scheme used by the ECU is very obviously a predecessor to the 02-05 WRX ECU, so it was very easy to understand the why and how to tuning the tables. It's missing some tables...

I only use OEM for gaskets, I get a parts discount and the difference between aftermarket and OEM cost-wise isn't worth the potential headache to me.

With stock EJ205 pistons and EJ205 headgaskets, you'll be at around 8.5:1 CR on EJ20G heads.
EJ205 pistons with EJ20G thick gaskets and 20G heads makes around 8.2:1 CR.

Stick with the low CR. You want the 1.3mm compressed thickness gaskets.

I do a lot of SOHC EJ25 reseals, and I've never used RTV and can confirm it is NOT called for in the FSMs. I don't seal the spark plug tube gaskets either. You probably have a wiring issue instead, the ABS ECU is reset and self checks on every key cycle.

You won't be able to run 87 octane fuel on any factory ECU with a turbo, regardless of if you use a 22t ECU or any factory N/A ECU. You'd need some sort of fully programmable aftermarket ECU, and power output will be significantly lower than running 91+ octane.
