Re: Ej251 with ej22t heads questions

You may not mean it like this, but it sounds like you're looking for an answer you won't get from us. You've decided you're going to do it and looking for confirmation that it'll work out fine. It won't. 10.6:1 CR plus or minus a bit according to the calculations I ran. Definitely incredibly detonat...

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

On a more technical "how does this work" note, the Subaru ECU has a "Load" variable that is calculated off of the MAF flow and a few other things. The fuel, timing, boost tables are scaled by load and RPM. So as the amount of load (airflow) changes, fuel and timing change as well...

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

The MAP sensor is already there, on the passenger side strut tower. It can read up to 25PSI of boost I believe. I know the 97-98 EJ20 sensor can for sure. It can also be rescaled to use any aftermarket MAP Sensor as well such as a 2-bar, 3-bar, etc. The MAF signal input to the ECU becomes the IAT si...

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

Speed density uses a MAP sensor and IAT to control fueling, so no MAF necessary.

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

It's not very user friendly. The PDF is the only manual they have. The software feels like a half-done CS project. The control scheme used by the ECU is very obviously a predecessor to the 02-05 WRX ECU, so it was very easy to understand the why and how to tuning the tables. It's missing some tables...

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

With more tuning we'll be able to improve spool even more, but we were seeing 15psi by around 2700RPM in third on the VF23. For the time being it's a stock fuel and timing map (Z4?) with a couple degrees pulled for safety in boost and WGDC dialed in. Without a wideband, I didn't want to make too man...

I only use OEM for gaskets, I get a parts discount and the difference between aftermarket and OEM cost-wise isn't worth the potential headache to me.

Re: Question of opinion, Blown head gasket ej20g

With stock EJ205 pistons and EJ205 headgaskets, you'll be at around 8.5:1 CR on EJ20G heads.
EJ205 pistons with EJ20G thick gaskets and 20G heads makes around 8.2:1 CR.

Stick with the low CR. You want the 1.3mm compressed thickness gaskets.

Re: RTV or No RTV for Valve Cover Gasket Replacement - SOHC

I do a lot of SOHC EJ25 reseals, and I've never used RTV and can confirm it is NOT called for in the FSMs. I don't seal the spark plug tube gaskets either. It's my experience that if the surfaces are nice and clean and you perform regular oil changes, the seals last a good 100k at least. I took apar...

You probably have a wiring issue instead, the ABS ECU is reset and self checks on every key cycle.

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

Up until some point in the fairly recent past they only sold through distributors and tuning shops. They still seem to lack some of the things that we as end-users want to see in products like this. If the tuning process on Mike's car goes well, I'd consider buying a couple to keep and use as stock ...

Looking good! I may be assisting with an EG33/MegaSquirt build someday in the future, so it's nice to come here and see how yours is going on occasion. When I build exhausts, I buy mandrel bent j-pipe and cut to get the bends I need. I think your way works as well, and is probably better than crush ...

Re: Turbocharging the EJ22E?

I've never seen a running EJ that needed the block decked, and I've gone at least as far as headgaskets on nearly a hundred engines. You won't need to split the block or have the surfaces decked if you start with a runner. Generally on an overhead cam engine, I avoid decking even during a complete b...

Here's some bits off the top of my head: My (Alphius') WRX swap thread has a wiring harness merge spreadsheet in it that may be somewhat helpful for you in understanding the connections that must be made, however the Legacy side of that wiring will be different as my swap was in a Gen2 Legacy. No ne...

Re: ESL Board for USDM 1st Gen Turbo Legacies

The early ABS is not the best. I could cause my 94 SS to disable ABS at the start of a drive in the snow just by mashing the throttle and letting the tires spin for about five seconds. The ABS light would light up solid and ABS would disable until the next key cycle. If the inputs from the wheel spe...

EJ25D swap is bolt-in and makes 165hp. $200 junkyard engine with $300 in headgaskets and resealing and it'll even be reasonably reliable.

Check out this thread I did on a WRX harness merge in a '99 Legacy GT sedan. It was a fun build, I much prefer the second gen over the first. I sold it a couple months ago in favor of a 4th gen GT 5MT wagon, though it was a hard decision to make. http://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?18817-Alphius-s-...

Re: Turbocharging the EJ22E?

You won't be able to run 87 octane fuel on any factory ECU with a turbo, regardless of if you use a 22t ECU or any factory N/A ECU. You'd need some sort of fully programmable aftermarket ECU, and power output will be significantly lower than running 91+ octane.
