Q's about Coffee Cup Mod/De-Snorkle
Hey Guys,
I am getting ready to do this mod on my legacy. What is the overall point of this mod? What changes did you see after doing this mod? Did you get quicker spool? What does it sound like? Would you recommend using a panel filter or an aftermarket cone filter?
Any suggestions/input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You hear lots of cool noises from the turbo, you get more air in your intake - into your aftermarket panel filter...When you upgrade your exhaust it might give a hp or two...not sure, but worth it for the sound effect alone...
If you don't want a coffee cup you can buy a part from MRT in Aus. But it will cost you over 100 bucks...

i did this mod to my car. insted of buying a coffy mug. i went to an exhaust shop and got a 6" pipe. pipe is 2.5" and tappered out to 3" on one side. then i cut the mid section out and used a silicon cupler.
3" to 2.5". then i got a 90 degree elbo for my idle air hose and made a hole in the silicon with a knife and jammed her in.
for the charcle canister i just bought a connecter and a new hose.
i didnt have to deal with the stock boost controller hose because im running wast gate presser.
then i got a maf adper from cost less for $4.00. friend gave me a used cone filter. i cleaned it up, reoiled it and now i can really hear my turbo and by pass valve.
its a cool little mod.

I did the coffee-cup (2.5"-3" muffler pipe reducer with welded on fittings) / desnork (4"PVC pipe feeding from the fenderwell) / K&N panel filter mod on a bone stock LSS auto & gained 07hp & 10ftlbs of TQ vs. the baseline on my g-tech pro.
0-60 times also decreased by .53 seconds, not too bad when you consider the small increase in HP/TQ.
The turbo & BOV sound more noticable after this mod as well.
If anyone is interested I recorded the HP/TQ change in 500RPM intervals for this mod vs baseline.
Devan PM me if you want one of these pipes as I have one one my car & 1 spare that came off of my parts car.

do you have a dyno sheet to prove this?

I just took out my snork... It sounds like you really have a big boxxer dog in your car. lol u get some gerrr going. above sound i find the power comes on faster and harder. It gives that little extra kick. That and the snork looks to be smaller then the rest of the intake

no, but it is common knowledge...
Hotter air = less dense air = less power
Also can mean higher EGT's for us turbo owners
The factory airbox isolates the filter from the engine heat...a cone filter does the exact opposite
Do some searching on the subject, and you will find some info that Josh (Legacy777) posted on the subject, he explains the advantages of retaining and modifying the stock airbox setup

I've seen BXSS' setup and it's pretty clean. I think we're going to do the same on my ride in the next few weeks. All you really need is a piece of muffler pipe that goes from 2.5 to 3", a few fittings and a welder. Some high heat black spray paint finishes things off nicely too.

I'm not sure about Legacys but I know cone filters caused problems with MAF (blown MAF's) on Impreza's. This in addition to loosing power due to a hot intake charge (+10*= -1hp) are a couple of strikes against cone filters.
A modified factory airbox should not be a restriction on 98% of the cars owned by members of this site, so why bother with a cone when your factory box can get the job done?
Chuck, Jose has been really playing with the TIG so I may re-do my coffee mug in Aluminum!!!!
Now I just need to find the materials to rig one up....
