PCV filter vs AOS/catch can?

Post by James614 »

Is it advisable to run an air filter in the pcv system instead of a $$$ cath can? The cheaper catch cans seem to be nothing more han an over priced box with a filter in the top anyways. And it's my impression that unless I spend close to $300, some oil will get by anyways. I'm thinking I can use a super cheap motorcycle air filter and do just fine replacing it as needed. Has anyone tried this? Is the blow-by too much to make it feasible? I did this on my old Jetta back in the day and t worked great, but that car didn't have 3 breather lines and wasn't boosted.

The cheaper catch cans do work, but will probably leave a little bit of oil mist by. You can add some mesh or similar in the catch can to help collect more oil.

Have you read over this thread?

I've got a couple links in there for mods to my catch can, and pictures/diagrams how a catch can should properly be setup.

I'm not so sure the air filter would work too well.
