Custom triple gauge install w/ pics

Post by Lego22T »

After having 3 gauges (oil press. / oil temp. / water temp.) on top of my dash I decided I'd add one more project to my current list...move the gauges to the vent space below that I rarely ever use.
Image

Took tons of measurements but it seemed the only way to really test and see if this would work was to create a cardboard mock-up.
Image

Not that it would surprise many people who truly know me...but this is a spare dash plastic I kept from the first Legacy Sport that ended up in a scrap yard. So I can always reinstall the stock one if I feel the need.
Image

With the inset lip to be removed, the 2-1/16" gauges will fit in the space allocated.
Image

Thanks in great part to the ownership of a Dremel tool, removing the unwanted plastic wasn't too much of a hassle. Only two would initially fit as the vent tapers to match the curve of the dash pad. Time to trim more plastic!!
Image

After lots more trimming and finessing with a round metal file, all three gauges fit. Now time to address the open space behind them.
Image

Thankfully I was smart enough several years ago to jump on a sale of 8"x12" textured ABS plastic sheets. This piece ended up being a scrap section I held on to from past project. Still have 8 sheets left for future projects!
Image
Image

Owning a hole saw kit has come in handy WAY more times than I ever thought it would!!
*Work smart, not hard!*
Just need to glue it to the dash plastic so it stays put.
Image

The finished product! I'm still at odds with the gauge rings being silver. Really contemplating making them semi-gloss black.
I still need to pull the wires up through the holes in the dash pad and rewire them, but that's not a huge issue
Image

Added the gauge hoods that were in use for the dash pods. I like it better than just the plain gauges
Image

I had to cut down the brackets to make them work. Of course I cut the first one an 1/8" short so I had to use a spare Auto Meter bracket in it's place
Image

Finished product and VERY happy with it!!

**On a side note, I did trace out a template of the plate I made to fill in the back side. So if anyone is interested I could scan it and email it out**

Awesome!! I've got my boost and afr gauge in the same spot but hadn't decided how to make the plastic trim yet. That seems to be the way to go though.

Thanks! I get very particular about things being tidy and clean looking for custom installs. I guess it comes with the territory of working in the custom car audio industry for so long. Of course having all the right tools to do proper work doesn't hurt either. 8)

Very nice setup!

Where did you get the gauge hoods? I would like to get one for my autometer boost gauge so I don't see the glare on the windowshield at night.

BTW, what's the silve button for above the radio?

The hoods come with the Premium Series gauges from ProSport. They DEFINITELY are a must! Not sure if they sell them individually or not. Never looked into that.

The button is a remote trigger for the Go Fast Bits electronic boost controller. It can be set up to be a preset selector or a Push-To-Pass button where it increases your settings for a user desired amount of time.

That is an Awesome Set-up !

Was hoping to find a steering column one that works, doesn't seem to be any out there for even a GC8 :(

Might just have to go that route :!:

Closest thing there is the Perrin Frog Pod (no longer made)

Or the adjustable Perrin Pod

Thanks!

They look like they would probably work with my autometer gauge. I'll have to try it out.

That is nice! Too bad those are the primary vents I use... but the same method should work for the spot under the stereo I presume, especially if you have a single DIN.

Thanks! The stereo had a bad drinking problem and now because of a court order it is forced to inform me that its "Sober". :-D

I had them there before but the convex type of lense makes it hard to read the top rim of the gauge face. That's why they were on top of the dash for a while then moved to the vent in a more OEM looking position.

I really like this look just not sure if I want to get rid of the center vents even though I have no A/C at the moment.

Thanks! I have so-so working A/C but the rest of the vents will still allow for air flow.
