Double DIN stereo install question

Post by CreepyOldGuy »

I'm getting ready to have an Alpine double DIN stereo I have laying around installed in my 94' wagon. Is there any mounting kits for these (I'm not finding one in my web searches) or any hints/tricks to fit a double DIN HU into our cars. The car currently has an aftermarket single DIN unit installed.

You would need to take out the lower pocket. The entire stereo bracket is a 2.5 DIN. So you can take the pocket out, bolt the double DIN stereo to the factory bracket, and then get a piece of trim to cover the 1/2 DIN opening below the stereo.

Thanks for the info! I have another question as I'm having the stereo installed by an "installer" off of Craigslist. The guy seems pretty knowledgeable and has good references but I don't want to run into any problems as he will be doing this where I work, in the parking lot. Should I expect the factory bracket to still be in place with an aftermarket single DIN HU currently installed? The factory pocket is still in place, there is a small open spot below the currently installed HU.

Where do you guys like to put amps in these cars? The installer is suggesting affixing it to the fold down portion on the back seat. He suggests this so it will be off the floor with the seat back up. I'm not to concerned about having the amp exposed, I do not fold the seats often or haul much more than groceries with the car.

From how you described, it sounds like the factory bracket should still be there. You can see from this pic how the factory bracket is installed with the four screws at the surface and two more back into the metal brackets. With all six removed the stereo bracket comes out.

Had my stereo installed yesterday, all went well. No issues with mounting the HU in the dash. The tweeters ended up on the A pillars as the installer was not comfortable with the install in my requested location on the dash. The amp is mounted to the back of the driver side rear seat, I'm hoping it survives okay there, short of building a rack or enclosure for it I did not see a better option. The installer has the speaker and/or RCA's to the amp mixed up as the balance/fade function does not control the speakers correctly, I will fix that myself. Overall I'm happy with it, nice to have my ipod and satellite radio in my soon to be daily driver (this is my winter car). I can post pics of the install if anybody is interested.
