After a long series of failed attempts at having someone do this for me I have decided to just do it myself. I have two extra door cards, so this first one is a test so I can figure out exactly what methods I want to use for the door cards I will use.

My game plan is to clean and dye the door cards, remove the inserts (which is a pain in the ass) and wrap them in either leather or alcantara.

Here is what I started with:

After dye:

The next step was to remove the insert. Being such an old door card the insert is actually glued down, as opposed to being removable like newer vehicles are. For this one I used a heatgun, scraper and a lot of time. Going forward I will use something along the lines of a hacksaw blade or something I can slide under the insert to cut the glue.

Here is the removed insert:

I am laying fiberglass over the back of the insert to make it more rigid when I wrap it. I am torn weather to fiberglass the front of it and smooth down, or just wrap over top of the original fabic. Thoughts anyone?

That's because these cars didn't need to be pulled apart to fix stuff all the time! Nice work!

I had great success removing the inserts from the two rear doors. Not a single tear!

Excellent work!

I'm excited to see how the final product turns out.

I am planning on starting a similar project on my interior. Keep it up, I think I will do it the same way myself. What has to be done to layer fiberglass? Is that something I should have prior experience with?

Not the greatest photo, but the two front door cards are cleaned up and dyed. I should probably get moving on finishing up the inserts pretty soon.

Fiberglass is a real pain in the ass, but as long as you can follow directions and have a little patience you shouldnt have any issues.

Hopefully I will get around to that soon. Did you have to replace the rubber trim that the windows roll down into? I should start stripping my interior in the next month or so and just want to get as many pointers as I can.

Took this out and cleaned it up. Needed to take it out for manual conversion anyway:

It's in really good shape aside from some discoloration, and the armrest is beat up. One question I have though, is the shifter surround different between the auto and manual?
