Should I dynamat everything?

Post by speezly »

Since installing group n strut mounts, Trans mount and stiffer struts and springs, my interior is rattling everywhere. Anyone else have this happen and if so what are some solutions? I'm thinking insulating the undersides of all the plastic trim, center console etc might help.

Dynamat work well in the right places like: the inside of the outer sheet metal, that cuts down on the road and wind noise. But under the panel it doesn't do much. The best thing I've found is to place sticky back foam where it rattles.

Exactly...Dynamat, unless they've changed something, is meant to control panel resonance and does not offer much actual sound-insulating (for lack of a better term...) layer. I would try to locate the precise locations of the rattles and go at them with foam as rallyak said. Either that or strip your whole interior and build it back up, using Dynamat or similar plus closed cell foam where possible.

I use sticky weather foam as well. It works great once you find the rattle ;)

I have most of the rattle pinpointed. Most of it comes from the center console and radio cluster. And I'm not sure I know what kind of foam you mean, like the adhesive backed stuff right? I'm thinking if I take the center console and radio cluster out and line all of the interlocking sides with the foam, it might cure it. I'll take pics when I get around to it, for now it's time to take the Legacy out in the snow and have some fun. (And probably create all new rattles in the process)

Also, would dynamat help if applied to the underside of the frame directly above and around the tranny ?

I used used a close cell foam with a layer of lead on top to cover my floor. My car has no cats and a flow master muffler, headers and group n mounts everywhere and mine is quieter than my wife's car with stock exhaust and dynamated.

I bought mine from a local rubber supply company that has most every thing rubber and foam. I'm not sure where to get it other than that.
