1992 Legacy BC Heater Core replacement part

Post by Olduser1 »

My 1992 Legacy Turbo developed a leak from the heater core over the New Year, I manged to by pass the hoses although I damaged the heater core 5/8th metal tubing coming out of the bulkhead.
I'm over in the UK where replacement parts hoses & heater core are v scarce - new from Japan $300 + postage.
The part number is 72012 AA000 this may be the same for Gen 2 Legacy's.

Can members comment or suggest replacement heater core supplier from the USA ?

Looks like it's RHD vehicle specific. In the US we did get a few RHD legacys, called the postal wagon.

I usually get parts from rockauto.com, but there's also AutoZone.com and https://www.oreillyauto.com

Some of the online Subaru dealerships are willing to ship international. If you would like to see about a Subaru part I can pass along contact info of someone you can talk with.

Josh, thanks again for your advice & comments , I'm faced with a task I don't relish .
I wanted to check what the access was like if I could lift the old heater core out of the unit by undoing the two metal pipes , none of the UK forum guys have a used heater core unit off the car.

Your part number matches the earlier gen 2 Legacys as well, you should be able to find one of those easier?

You got to pull the dash, and separate away the AC box if you have one. Double check you removed all the bolts and/or nuts holding the heater core in. Remove the heater core hoses that are in the engine bay. Then, you'll have to use all of your strength to pull the heater core out. It's been held in by adhesive for the last 27 years, so it's gonna be tough. But not impossible.

Part way through this task, just an issue with the Instrument Cluster , whats the correct method for removal of the unit do I undo the 2 screw in RED or the four shown in Green on the photo?
Any tips for accessing the speedo cable release once I have the unit out and the connections marked & removed ?
Any suggestions most welcome.

Are you trying to remove the entire cluster? If so I think the screws with the red arrow would be what you need to remove.

Part way through the heater matrix change , getting closer to the point where I need to remove the instrument cluster then release the speedo cable to clear the way to remove the whole of the dash to get at the a/c , fan & heater boxes.
I'll let the forum know how it turns out -too cold to work today

Update, I completed the heater matrix replacement outside between Christmas & New Year. The Later model legacy unit with the dog-leg copper pipe fits the BC .Weather in UK was wet windy & cold.
I photographed the whole job made easy with digital camera, even so reassembley of the heater controls & switches need 2 goes to get all units correctly located. Labelled all the parts .
RHD Legacy has push on connections on rear of instrument panel -no speedo cable.
Also needed to have the steering column dropped as well as the steering wheel support bracket removed.
ECU removed before the whole heater control unit was able to be removed.
Take care when persuading the old unit out and equal care when fitting the replacement - its a snugg fit.
I left the a/c unit in place, just released the fan unit to allow access to the heater unit
Issues ? well I now have a spare dash cover , a couple of odd screws
Would I tackle it again? unlikely and certainly not in the winter.

My Legacy due to turn 100k miles this summer, just returned from a 300 mile trip to English lake Disctrict, happy again and warm at last.
