What to do with a free SVX?

Post by cartwheels »

So over the weekend I acquired a free 92 SVX... this car was involved in a rear end collision that broke most of the suspension on the left rear wheel as well as tweaked the sheet metal pretty bad (see pictures). The good news though is that true to its Subaru heritage, it runs perfectly even after sitting for 3 years in a garage.

Anyone on here know of good places to source SVX parts for cheap? I've gotta get this thing back on the road, she's a beautiful car that's taken an awful beating in her lifetime. I'll be cross-posting on SVX boards, I just wanted to share my story with this site and see if any of you guys knew something the SVX guys didn't :]

Hahaha, my friend Zach giving the SVX his approval:

Twin vf43's!!

The rods are the same as Legacy Turbo ones... so any aftermarket 2.2 rods will drop in and same with forged pistons ;)

Whats the mialage?

I might find one wrecked in front, and do a little cut and paste. Seems like those things in good shape go for some money.

Hmm, looks like a fairly easy fix... cut out and weld or bond a new 1/4 panel, & replace some rear suspension bits?

If you decide not to keep it, post it on thesamba.com and vwvortex.com, someone will snap it up for a Vanagon engine conversion.

Or....Better yet.

Hold onto it, and find a VW of your own to put it in. 3.3 in a 914 would be schweet! :-D

they do it with the 257!

Personally, I wouldn't fix it.

If I was looking for a project I would use the drivetrain and part the good parts to SVX owners.

If I was wanting an SVX, I would pick up a clean, but mechanically needing, SVX for cheap. Then start swapping parts over.

Well, my situation is that of a college student who needs a job, and who likes to tinker with cars in his spare time (used to work for Starbucks, but no more). Saw an SVX at a Subaru meet a few weeks back, and happened to be browsing SVX forums one night when I saw a post about a free one... once the poster informed me the engine was included I couldn't pass it up. My only problem now is finding the money to do something with the running wreck occupying my garage. Hahahaha.

In short, I'm out of my mind.

Yes you are. But we've all been there at one time or another.

Good luck with the project.

If it becomes too much.... I'm close, I've got a big backyard, and I'd pay you a little for it.  I've always wanted to play with an EG33.

a friend just gave me an 88 celica gt convertible for real cheap.

it has ohio rust but it only has 100k miles and runs good and interior and top are in good shape.

the worst i see are the brake lines look rusted.

i am trying to decide if i want to keep it or sell it.

we are all nuts for cheap cars.

Well, can't say I'm surprised. Finally took off the temporary spare that the previous owner had thrown on the car, and after crawling underneath I found a bent rear subframe. Don't know if this particular example will ever see the road again, which is a shame. Fixing it may just be cost-prohibitive at this point. Stay tuned.

as long as the shell aint bent just get a new rear subframe from somewhere(got to be some yard down there with one in it) pound the dent out and make a quick $500 or so.
