Base model '90 Legacy in the junkyard.

Post by Alphius »

I found an interesting Legacy in the junkyard today. It would make a good lightweight racecar shell I think. ;) I tried to take pictures of most of the unique features. This was a 2.2, 5-speed 2WD base model Legacy.

Back view. Notice unpainted bumpers and no center garnish.
Image

Engine bay. Notice how there is no A/C or ABS or cruise control from the factory. Looks pretty clean in here. The engine appeared to be in really good shape too.
Image

Non-A/C heater controls.
Image

Manual crank windows on all 4 doors and no power locks.
Image

No intermittent wipers and no cruise control.
Image

Image

Non-folding rear seats.
Image

Image

Full vinyl headliner. Not cloth.
Image

It also had non-height adjustable seats.

Yep, would have had that stock as well. Too bad this one is broken. :(

Yeah, these base models are around. The main things that set them apart from the L's are the bumpers, rear garnish, no AC, cruise, single DIN radio, no power windows & (assuming no power locks), and no power mirrors (you can see that control is missing in the picture above).

My L does not have intermittant wipers, has a vinyl headliner, and no folding rear seats as well.

I hardly ever see them around here.
Hardly ever see the pre-facelift ones in general either, I didn't know the pre-facelift L didn't have the int. wipers, rear seat and vinyl headliner. I mostly have seen pre-facelift LS or facelift L cars.

Mine is a pre-facelift L and has the vinyl headliner, back seats don't fold and the wiper had 1 setting for the int. wipers. Behind my back seat is a bar that goes across the opening into the trunk. That one looks like you could put some foldable seats in it.

I have to wonder what that bar in mine is for.

That bar is for handling! Stiffens up the rear a little but it is removable if you really want to.

If the body is fine, then it's likely either a blown engine or trans?

It said that it runs and drives on the windshield. Body was fine. It probably had a small problem and somebody thought it wasn't worth paying to get it fixed and would rather get a couple hundred bucks for it from the junkyard.

Mine has that bar as well. I think the bar is primarily for supporting the seat back.

Ha, this thing is sweet.

I want that rear garnish. I wonder how cheap I could get it painted for

There is no garnish. That's the metal of the trunklid. :-D

Ah damn. So I'd need the entire trunk. I'm driving up that way in a few weeks. Maybe if its still there I'll grab it.

No, just remove the garnish from your trunk and voilà it'll look exactly the same.

I didn't think about the holes....

You could just remove the garnish and paint it....that might work.

I plastidipped the chrome in the taillights and the middle red section and chrome in the middle panel black. Looks 10x better.

Funny enough I found one of these cars yesterday in a junkyard here. The trunk was missing the Subaru and Legacy badges and the clear light strip was cracked in multiple places. Too bad. Someone ripped the HVAC controls out and broke them as well. I don't have A/C in my car anymore and wanted those :/

I wonder if these base models came in pewter metallic...my color. That would be sweet. I saw a white one driving today as well. Was in amazing condition.

I saw what looked like a pewter metallic base model on craigslist a year or so back. Pictures were small so it could have been a different yet similar color I suppose.

I'll just keep looking then. Need to find a pewter metallic LSi so I can get some non chrome handles as well.

Thats a VERY early Legacy a 1989 1/2. Its got the Black bumpers and no tail light strip on the deck lid. I owned that same car. Same color combo everything. I bought it in 96 for $50. It was left at a shop by the org owned and given to my friend. I bought it off her for $50. Mind u the car was only 6 years old. Were can u buy a 6 year old car for $50. It needed a Clutch and it already had 177k on it. When that car left my hands it had 256k on . I know it went over 300k . I saw the car again about 4 years after i sold it. Still running but it had been in a wreck. This post brings me back
