Crashed '91 the future?

Post by Nohbdy »

Alright so I didn't want to put this in the parts shed yet just to get some opinions. I crashed my '91 on 2/3/14  and I won't lie I'm kinda depressed about it I had so much hope for it and now it's gone. My first thought is fix it and ride again but the problem I have come to is I can't find/get a donor car to fix it. I wanted to stick to the first gens but the ones I do find on the internet they're asking too much for the condition of the car so at this time (2/11/14) I'm looking at a '98 legacy gt with a blown head gasket. So this leaves the poor '91 to be dealt with, this is where your opinions come in. What should I do to her part her out, sell her to somewhere like Pull-A-Part, or just strip her down and scrap her out? If I do part out I would want to post it on here so she can live on :-D . But like many of you guys I could ship some stuff but not big things like a door or engine things like that :/ , so I'm not sure what to do. :?:

Part it out. The shortblock alone will net you $300-$500 which is as much or more than a yard will give you for the whole car.

It's a FWD N/A, aside from interior, and front end, you probably won't sell too much. You might be able to scrap it for about $500. Just depends on whether you want it gone or you have the will to rebuild it.

Buy the 98, take your ej22 shortblock, put the ej25d heads on it and run some boost.

Hey thanks for your guys input. I think I'm going to repair it because it's the only Subie out of the 3 we own at this time that I trust. We have a 99 outback that I think now has a blown head gasket and the 98 has a ton of under body rust as well as rust in strange places. So I feel like the end result with be a crashed then fixed 91

Robert- Yeah it wasn't fun the fence post was not forgiving in the slightest

Rallyak- Hahahaha yeah I wish I was close but you're a little out there for me. I have the means and people with the skill to fix the front, but I don't have the parts I need. These is never any scrap first gen pre-facelift cars around to cut some of the front off for use

You guys are brave. I would never even consider trying to fix that.

A lot of it is just ruffled a little. But it doesn't have things like others might have (i.e. ABS, AWD, Turbo). I really only need to take off about an inch back from the front for the body to work, although, it will require new body skins as you can see (hood, bumper, fenders)

Kudos to you for wanting to fix it. I would just scrap it and buy another one. Seeing as it's FWD NA. But hey it's good experience.

What about taking the bus to another state with a ton of subies, making a road trip back with it? You could get a rust free example if it came from florida or some other sunny state.

I would love to do something like that Mike but sadly I really don't have the money hanging around to do something like that at this point. But if I did I would do that in a heart beat.
Around here it really does take on the meaning of these cars being a barn find, cause there's where a lot of them are left.

(I just looked on CL in Florida and first thing on the list after searching Subaru is a 1993 Legacy sedan :x )

How much will it cost to repair the car vs. finding another good one in FL or somewhere else? If you sit down and do the math it may be cheaper to get another one if you found a good deal.

Well it would cost something in the line of $300 cause the only way I can find parts for this car is a pull-a-part or pick-a-part. So after much debating I think I'm going to part out the car just as the best solution. As much as I don't want to it's just more economical this way.
