How would you know someone didn't just stick a plaque on the belt guard or took that piece off a different motor?
91 Black SS 5spd. Edm lights, wrx gauges in dash, 45 degree airbox, cryoed drilled and slotted brakes. Invidia divorced downpipe with custom stainless exhaust. To be installed, aluminum a-arms, manual belts, awic.

Isn't there a method of running some sort of pump on an engine to verify displacement? If it is 2.2L I'd say its good to go, since Japan has no source of cheap EJ22s to drop into their STIs. And that's a lot of work for an importer to do to fool you.
