Sport Sedan and Touring Wagon Production Numbers

I was just doing a google search when I came across this information. Is this really true? I know turbo legacys are hard to find, but these numbers seem too low. Does anyone know whether or not this is an actual count?

1991 - 58 5-speeds were sold, and 149 automatics were sold.

1992 - 6 5-speeds were sold, and 5 automatics were sold.

1993 - 25 5-speeds were sold, and 45 automatics were sold.

1994 - 170 5-speeds were sold, and 230 automatics were sold.
Look familiar? I'm not sure how many people ever really believed this information, although I've seen it spread far and wide over my years with these cars. I have been among the skeptical for many years as well. In fact, not too long ago I provided my own dose of reality based on all the facts we thought we would ever have:
Alphius wrote:I've seen literature from the period where Subaru was reporting 3-5% take rate for the turbocharged 91-94 Legacy. That would put yearly production around 3100-5300 units for a total of 12,400-21,200 produced over all 4 years. This is probably as accurate as we will ever know.

The numbers that SOA and SOC provided are bunk. Don't know how they came to that, but there's way more out there than they say.
Well, here we are today, and I'm happy to say that guesses and speculation are no longer all we have to go on. I reverse engineered Subaru's dealer parts lookup software and extracted actual production VIN information on the first generation Legacy, as well as a good selection of other Subarus.

Without further ado, take a peek at this and let me know what you think:

Awesome work!

Interesting that the numbers went down over the years.

Do you mind sharing how you reverse engineered the info from the parts book to extract this information?

Thanks

Subaru FAST has a VIN lookup function that tells you all the options the car has. I figured it had to be in some sort of database format, so I looked around with a hex editor. Turns out it's a proprietary binary database of some sort, but I managed to extract all the information to a fixed-width text file and import it into a true database so I can filter the data and figure out production numbers for different option combinations for pretty much any Subaru from 1984-2010.

Pretty cool! Thanks again for doing this!

I updated the other thread with this thread, stickied this one, and unstickied that one.

Now the real question is this: of the 8,199 produced, how many are left?

It'd be interesting to find that out. Not sure if it's possible to get that kind of info without spending a ridiculous amount of effort getting it though, sadly.

Is ceramic white the same as Pearl White for the 91 sedan? Only 2 seems way to small of a number.

Probably....I don't know if I've ever heard/seen an official "ceramic white" color....but I could be wrong.

I would lean towards no. The pearl paints in my experience are not the same as ceramic.

My '90 had the ceramic white. When I went turbo'd, I found a '91 pearl white hood (with scoop).
The Automotive Touchup site shows these, which I think are factory #'s:
057 Ceramic White
075, 975 Mica White/White Pearl
