What does BC/BF mean?

Does anyone know what BC and BF actually mean? I tried searching here, google, and nasioc but couldn't get anyhting on it. I know that sedans are bc and wagons are bf but what do the b, c and f stand for? I'm assuming b= boxer. But then where did the g-series(impreza) come from? Also with the second and third gen, bd/bg, be/bh is it just because c d e and f g h or is there some meaning behind it?

I don't think there's any specific meaning behind it.....it's just the body code of the car's chassis.

This leads me to another question. What is the difference between a BC5 and BC6?

I believe BC5 means "BC with a 2.0-liter engine" and BC6 means "BC with a 2.2-liter engine." I don't think it actually distinguishes between the naturally aspirated and turbocharged EJ22.

I thought the BC5 was the 90-91 legacies & the BC6 was the 92-94 legacies.......but that's just a thought/guess.

Well that can't be since my vin says bc6.

I thought it differentiated between turbos and non-turbos... but my 91 is a BC6, and boostjunkie's car (Adam's old car) is a BC5... :?

Bump!

So, what's a BJ6, then? I have an MY90 5MT/FWD Legacy L Wagon. Is it kind of like the GC8 Impreza, which doesn't exist on our side of the pond, but everyone calls it a GC8 anyway?

Edit: Nevermind...

the bc and bf differences are listed in the chiltons manual... does no one have this?

ok, it's not very clear in there, but it looks like "B"= Subaru and the "C" or "F" are the body type (4dr sedan and wagon respectively)

and the JF1 is another way of indicating Subaru (as Fuji Heavy Industries)

so a (JF1) BC6 is a Subaru 4dr Sedan with the 2.2l engine

Damn this thread is old. One of my first :D

Anyway, what I realize now is that what we were talking about was the applied model code, and not the vin.
The first char is the model line. A = Loyale, B = Legacy, C = SVX, G = Impreza, K = Justy, S = Forester, W = Tribeca. I'm sure the other chassis have their own letters as well, like the R1, 360, Sambar, etc.
The second is the generation and body style. C = first gen sedan, F = first gen wagon, J = first gen low-roof wagon and so on.
Third is the engine type, there's tons of this depedning on the first two, from 1=9 and letters even. 5 = 2.0 turbo for Legacys, and 6 = 2.2 (turbo or not) for legacys. Imprezas are different.
there's more characters than describe the model even more like tranny, trim, etc. Basically the applied model code says pretty much everything about the type of car.

In fact Gen1 2.2 Non Turbo Sedan is a BC7......Could be different on USDM as mine's AUDM.......

Wow, it's WJM.

Anyway, Brian is right. 7 = 2.2 I was looking at the vin like a noob, instead of the applied model code.

I thought it would be fun to revive this thread for my question.

Found this on YahooAuctions Japan and I am wondering if it will fit a 1992 SS.
http://page15.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/t50782317

I know that BC5 just speaks to the fact that they have the 2.0 Turbo but since we have pre/post facelift I was wondering if the BC5s did too and if I should be worried that this will only fit pre-facelift BCs.

TIA

it says bc5 so if thats what your car is then you'll be fine,.......wait.....
except when you have to pay for shipping then you will cry for hours

Well I don't have a BC5, I have a BC6 like all the other North American cars. But I think there is a good chance the front bumper is compatible.....

I guess I need to find out if the listing mentions pre/post facelift or Zenki/Kouki as they say.....
