Email notification looks a little like spam

Post by vrg3 »

The mail servers at my school use a system called PureMessage to flag email that's likely to be spam. It's a fairly simple system that just uses a bunch of rules to "score" an email, and if the rules say it's got a 50% chance or higher of being spam, it flags it as such.

Ever since we got email notification working again, PureMessage has been flagging some Legacy Central emails (particularly private message notifications) as likely spam.

The reasons include things like:

The sending address is a "forged" Yahoo! address.
There is a line longer than 199 characters.
The "From:" header doesn't include a real name.
The SMTP server received a "HELO" command with a numeric address instead of a hostname.
It includes an "X-MSMail-Priority:" header.

I know most of this isn't "wrong," and that a lot of it isn't easily changed, but could we change any one of these things? PureMessage is giving a 57% spam probability, so changing just one of these would probably push it back below the threshold.

Maybe make the sending address "management@bbs.legacycentral.org" or something instead of "legacycentral@yahoo.com?"

Or put line breaks in the long paragraphs?

Thanks for all the work you guys put into Legacy Central, admins and mods.

I was confused for a bit too cause all the activiation emails kept getting sent to my bulk mail folder. I had to setup a filter to let the emails from this board come through. I'm not sure how to stop it, but there are probably other people who also are losing emails to their spam filters.

Perhaps there are some key words in the subject line that could be re-worded to be less consipicuous. Are you spoofing the FROM address or anything else that spammers do?
