Some sites have chat rooms. Is this possible here? Seems like we could use a more direct form of interaction

www.mirc.com

Join any random Efnet server.

then type /join #legacycentral

There are about 5 of us in there at the moment. most of us at once was 4, but that's pretty decent I think.

Are you sure you connected toa server, it usually takes longer on efnet than any other networks for whatever reason. Did you enter in all the information correctly? what nick are you using?

umm sorry, I just gave up, seems kind of crappy anyway so I uninstalled it. maybe I'll just add my aim and yahoo id's to my profile.

You could just try trillian, which does AIM, ICQ, MSN, Y! and IRC. I don't use it for IRC myself, but it's definitely easier than mIRC.
