IMG tag in signatures

Post by vrg3 »

Is it actually possible to disable the use of the IMG tag in signatures, rather than just rely on people not to use it?

No need to be rude, Brian.

In my opinion? There are several difficulties, like:

- You cannot specify the dimensions of the image. This breaks the current HTML standards.

- The page cannot be correctly rendered until the images are loaded. The loading time for these images also includes DNS lookup time, which can make even a small image on a fast connection take several seconds to download. With many web browsers, this means that if you are trying to read a page as soon as you have the text, your position in the page will drastically change every time an image appears.

- The reader is given no choice about whether or not his bandwidth is to be used to load the images that are not relevant to the conversation.

- Images in signatures decrease the signal-to-noise ratio of every page on which they appear.

- This all gets even worse when the reader has to conserve bandwidth (either because he's on a low-bandwidth connection or because he is charged for every byte of traffic he uses), and/or is using a device with a low-resolution display.

If i could, i would.

SubaruJunkie's 3 images are over 50kb each, when they should probably be closer to 30k for all 3.

I can disable signatures as a whole, but i don't think it will come to that. Please use some forethought when doing signatures.

I would have to agree, in that the pictures really take more away from the posts. Yes, the pics look nice, but if I want to look, let me decide to link. There are times when my linkup is slow, and the pics just make the loads slower.

In the interests of keeping the speed up, I don't have pics in my signature.

It's been one of those things everyone has seemed to agree upon, no pics in the sigs. So Brian can you get rid of the pics in your signature.

50kb an image is nothing these days. People who are still on dialup should learn to deal with it. I will remove the images if thats what everyone wants.

A 50kb image in one person's sig isn't a problem Brian, we all know that.

But guess what?? I wanna have an image in MY sig too. It's not fair that YOU get to have one and I DON'T!

I'm being facetious of course, but this kind of argument is inevitable. So we can either let everyone have a pic in their sig and make the page 10 times longer to load, or we can just allow NO ONE to have pics in their sigs at all. That solves the problem.

I believe my images were tasteful and an apropriate size. Its not like i had a 1280x1024 image or anything. I made them with the intent of having them as a signature. Anyone who knows me from the USMB should know how I make my signatures. I preffer HTML over anything, but since no BBS supports HTML anymore, i have to design my signatures with images in order to get the correct formatting.

Oh well, its gone now. The images can be enjoyed at the USMB.

Why alienate the portion of the community that desires accessibility and doesn't want to wait 10 times as long for a page to load? 50 kilobytes is huge; that's a full ten seconds on the best phone modems in ideal conditions; often it's closer to 30. Just telling people to suck it up doesn't reflect consideration and friendship.

Having no home of my own, I frequently get online using my laptop and my cell phone in my parked car. As both Phil and Matt can attest to, it's painfully slow even when only browsing text. A single image literally adds minutes to the download experience.

Think of the children!

sucks to be you... sounds like you have more problems than just surfing the internet.

What about me? Why force me to remove images because of a few dialup users? The broadband era has arived. Broadband users are starting to outnumber dialup users. I havent used dialup in almost 6 years. Why should I limit my signature to just text to please the few who are stuck on dialup? If you ask me, your just a bunch of fucking crybabies. I hope LegacyCentral's BBS is the only page you visit, because i have news for you....

Not all of us want the security problems of BB nor do we want to waste the extra money. Some of us use the internet for research, not the downloading of porn and glossy over-styled websites. I have little problem with dial up as I use it and would like to keep it that way, personally.

I'm fortunate enough to have a nice ethernet access since I'm on a college campus but the fact is, there are an awful awful awful lot of people that don't have broadband. Do you know hard it is to get any kind of highspeed internet if you live outside a city in a rural area without having to pay an arm and a leg? Seriously, I'd say maybe 30% of the population in my area has broadband and 15% of that is college students living in student apartments. And quiet frankly, if I didn't have to do so much of my school stuff over the internet and load .5mb pdfs all the time for classes I wouldn't be paying for ethernet, it's expensive. Vikash and Steve are far from the only ones with dial up here. As much as they give help us and contribute, the least we can do is make it a little easier for them to speak up. Then there is the fact that as it's been said, there is a gentleman's agreement among us not to use images. It is nothing personal Brian, but you do have to consider this gentleman's agreement and quiet honestly these guys have been around a lot longer than you or I so yeah I think there is a bit of seniority that should be considered. Like I said, it's nothing personal, we're all friends here, but this is a site for information and it should stay such. We have a picture gallery for a reason.

Yes, people forget that most of America is actually still on dialup. With NetZero and PeoplePC offering dialup for $10 a month, it's actually an attractive offer if you're not that concerned with high-speed.

Don't forget I've been on DSL for maybe 2 months, I was on dialup before that for 2 years. I just finally said enough was enough, and I could finally afford it.

And Brian, step back and think about what a ridiculous thing you're getting all pissed off about. So you can't have a pic in your sig, big friggen deal.... All the rest of us aren't having any issues with it.

Damn... I guess some of us feel strongly about this. In my opinion, it would be nice if we could have it, but I understand that a lot of people are on dial-up and it really doesn't add anything to the forum.

I'm still on dialup. I hate images, even if I tell my browser not to load them. Yes, I browse sites other than the BBS, but it IS my staple. In fact, sometimes the bbcode doesn't load as well as it should, and I'm stuck with the smartdark theme in white, with white text! My computer can handle it, thank you, I'm well-equipped, but.. sometimes we just have to leave it as-is.
Not to mention...
Brian, please take a look at the member list. I'd love for you to find out how many of our guests, and others in the US, CAN, and whereever they're from use broadband. You think Brazil has dialup everywhere? Nope.
Heck, I live in a pretty wired area, (Edgewood, WA) but my house is ~30ft too far off the road, which prevents cable (yes, even CABLE TV) from getting to my residence. I live just fine without Comcast. Do I want it? Of course!
Is DSL possible? Nah. Have to switch our local phone service, and re-wire the entire house with compatible phone line.
That well exceeds the cost of my $14.95/month unlimited dialup access, which I've NEVER gotten a busy signal on. And furthermore, I personally like the modem handshake sounds. It turns me on. :D So there.

I don't give a shit about dialup users. I've been on broadband for years and I still don't want to deal with pics all over the board. It's such a PITA having to wade through pages of pics to find useful information. One of the things I like about this forum is that it's fairly content rich compared with some other car forums. Look at all the stupid Honda sites that look worthless with all the pics everywhere filling up the entire screen and shit. Just looks a lot more cluttered and hard to read.

Yeah... i get the point. Let it rest, the images are gone and you guys can have your precious text back.

I understand everyones point of view. Im more of a visual type. Instead of having text with the very little mods I've done to my car, sometimes its better to have images for people to see.

Plus, "1984 Subaru GL Wagon with 3" lift" doesnt look nearly as cool as: Image
