yes, yes. they can only be 180k or something real small. i doubt it'd bog down the 56k-ers all that much.

180k!? That's huge!

If we did that kind of thing, I'd think a limit of 6 or 8 kilobytes should be more than enough. When I'm traveling, even that could add up to a minute or so to a message download.

I think it'd be more useful to make it so we could put the type of car we had under our name, kind of where we have our locations right now.

This was discussed earlier in the board's beginnings. I personally don't have any problems with it, and don't mind avatars, but there are people with on 56k that may have problems. Not to mention it increases the load on the server resources.

I spent several months in a hotel in jersey for work, and all I had was dial up......and it was slow dial up at that......I didn't do much surfing the web.....it was painfully slow.

The decision was made not to have avatars.

The car description idea isn't a bad one. It would require a hack to the coding to do something like that. Dave is the one sorta handling the admin stuff. Hopefully he'll see this, and chime in.

Oops. 6k is the limit at the place I was thinking about. Geez, roadrunner at home and DSL at work has distorted my sense of size!

This forum is on loaned bandwidth, and of all of the sites on the box, it uses the most. Granted, there aren't a lot of high-traffic sites, but i want to keep the footprint to a minimum.

The idea for the car specs or description is good, most people just slap that in their signature. I'll look into how hard it is to add.

We could put them in our sigs, as some of us do, but I personally feel that in forums like this sigs add bulk to a thread whereas stuff over at the sides doesn't take up any extra space.

It's also kind of weird that sigs are both part of and not part of messages. As a computer science graduate that irks me. :)

Dave, Josh, do either of you think we might be able to implement this?

I like the idea of having our cars a selectable option in the profile. That way the memberlist can be sorted by type of car.\

Hey guys, do ya think if we were really, really good boys (and girl) that we could resurrect avatars sometime in the future? If we pinky-promise that there won't be any nudie pics or anything otherwise offensive?

Do it like this. Have someone like Thawa host all the avatar pics. He can control the size and whatnot of them all. Then, instruct everyone to submit their avatars to Thawa for approval and filtering of the pics. If there is a problem with someone uploading one then a mod can delete it and pm them the process for submitting an avatar.

I wouldnt mind doing that if its alright with you guys. Though I think most people would like the freedom to change their tar at a whim. I could setup a new album in the gallery, and limit the file size and pic dimensions. Dunno if that would help or not.

A good solution to the 56k users' problem would be to make the personal avatars be able to be toggled on or off in the profile section. this way, 56k users could just choose not to see them.

I understand that if it isn't already built in to the code of this message board, it is probably next to impossible. I'm just flapping my lips here.... er...my fingers... I guess.

Due to past experiences with pics and trying to manage them, I've asked subyluvr to take the pic out of his sig.

If we let one person do it, then everyone should have the right to. However it's a lot harder to control the size of everyone's pic, and not everyone would use thawa's hosting.

That's the point, that would be a requirement. You are allowed to require something when it helps alleviate a previous problem. This way it is done in an orderly fashion. If someone wants to change their avatar every 5 mins, then they will just have to resubmit to Thawa each time... that would just be part of the deal. This way it stays nice and regulated.

we have no way of controlling where the source image is coming from. If we could say that only images in sigs could come from thawa's site....then that'd be fine. However we can't, and it just becomes too much of a pain to try and manage/police the images when/if they get out of hand. eg the avatars. I felt like the damn avatar police....

ok, i understand what you are saying. but, maybe you could delegate that responsibility to someone else to be the avatar policeman. anyone but Laurel, though, she'd be a Nazi...

i only bring the point up and am trying hard for a solution because i feel it adds a lot to the board. i like looking at the avatar and recognizing the writer instead of reading all the painfully long names ;)

I just don't think anyone should have to be the avatar police.

I understand that having avatars/images in sigs would be a nice feature, but for right now I don't think I'm goin to enable them.
