FS: GC8 5spd special ratio dog box kit $7500/obo

Post by Matt Monson »

Hello,
I've got a dog box kit for sale. It's manufactured by Modena and is new. In case you aren't familiar with Modena, they are the original high performance aftermarket manufacturer of Subaru gearboxes. They've got half a dozen Australian national rally championships to their name, Tommi Makinen runs their gears in his car, and most recently they supplied the gearboxes for the Dakar Foresters. They say that immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, PPG is composed of former Modena employees who copied these gears for their own product line. But enough about that.

What I have here is a complete dog box kit for the 5spd. You could say that the ratios are a hybrid of v5/v6 STi street ratios and RA ratios. The 1,2 are RA and 3,4,&5 are STi. This makes for a tall first with a great tight stack that will get you to 100mph really quickly. But it will still cruise down the highway without revving too high. The ratios are as follows:
1st gear 3.00
2nd gear 1.92
3rd gear 1.294
4th gear 1.000
5th gear 0.791

PPG sells their equivalent kit for $9000 US. Modena sells this for $10,000 AU down under. I'm asking $7500 for it but it's obo. And if you race and want to use this kit for that, please contact me privately. I can arrange a significant discount in return for what would amount to me sponsoring you.

Specialist installation of this kit is required. I will only recommend a few mechanics in the states to install this. But it's all there. We can install it for you and can provide a push or pull style case if you need one. Front and center differentials as well as ring and pinion sets will be extra. We can provide front and center LSDs.

If you aren't familiar with a 2 piece mainshaft design please don't hesitate to ask questions. Thanks for your interest and your time.

Regards,

Matt

Bump.
Just got a second one of these in Group N ratios. Same price but not something I would drive on the street, or at least the highway. Intended for rally only.

Yep. they just fell out of the sky and landed on my lawn here in Colorado. It's a good thing they were well wrapped because the snow would have ruined them in an instant at this time of year.

I'm selling them for the manufacturer. They are old stock that he's just got sitting around because he mostly does 6 spd stuff these days. He really only does 5spd stuff special order or when existing customers need replacement parts for a kit that's already in service.

Basically these are his old sales samples that he used to take to trade shows. Back in December at PRI he decided he didn't want to fly them back to Australia, so he left them with me to get rid of for him. As such, the price is negotiable. And I will be able to support these with replacement parts and service components for as long as you plan to run them.

I don't generally advertise on this site what I do for a living, but I am Modena's exclusive distributor of Porsche transaxle parts for the Western Hemisphere and most of Europe under the brand name of GT. My company is called Guard Transmission. I can also supply any of his 6spd stuff or Subaru LSDs if anyone is ever interested.

Wow!! Anyone that is considering a 6spd to handle their power should really consider this! When I bought my built tranny from Matt I had him install a Modena front LSD and I have been in love with it from day one. Search around and you'll find Modena is where it is at.

I've also yet to have any problems with my gearbox after a full race season and plenty of daily city driving. His team really is top notch. I know everyone's heard me praise him before - but honestly his company treats you right. I've worked with a lot of tightly controlled aerospace companies on 8 figure dollar plus programs and Matt's team has treated me with the same respect and response as my aerospace business dealings.

Best of luck with the sale Matt!! You wouldn't be up for a transmission trade would you, my gears aren't that worn ;).

Lee,
Thank you for the kind words. I'll give you a $1500 credit on your core gearbox. But then what are you going to put these gears into?

^^^ I thought I had bought your last 5sp front diff? I guess that was a year ago though...

I wish I could take this off your hands Matt and the guys at work have been giving me a hard time for not doing it - but I just can't justify it right now :(.

And anyone that's never had a front LSD - they are the 'bomb diggity'! You can really feel them working in the corners.

Lee,
When I bought Guard Transmission 9 months ago I found all kinds of goodies in his off site storage shed. That's where the first gearset was. He didn't know he had some of this stuff. I've got 4EAT front diffs as well.

Hello,

I'm tired of tripping over these things. I'm dropping the price of the "street" set to $6000 and the Group N homologated set to $6750. Someone needs these gears. If you buy them at the above price, I'll still include a front diff. with them at $1000.

^^^ I mean no disrespect at all, but I assume you left out a zero in your offer or meant it as a joke? These gears are worth every penny and so is the front diff. These are the real deal and true race quality. If I had the money and didn't already own a box built by Matt, I'd buy these in a heart beat over a 6spd. This not the type of thing you lowball - if you can't afford the gearset you can't afford the rest of the car that should go along with these :).

Everytime this thread gets bumped I find myself dying a little inside because I can't own them and they haven't found a good home.

*Sorry for cluttering your thread Matt.
