[update]: Royal Purple (1/11/04)

Post by georryan »

Well after thinking my tranny was low on fluid I decided to add some from stuff we had in the garage. Once I got it to full I left it alone and waited till I drove it around some before checking it again. After a quick drive it was below full again so I added a little more until it said full. I thought after it mixed in the gearing it would be a little low again. Nope, this time it was over full, but a good margin. I was a little perterbed, but chocked it up to being too hot maybe and expanding too much.

After a driving a bit with it always overfull, I've decided to go back to square one and drain the sucker and put in the right amount. I thin it is around 4 quarts or something, I'll have to look it up. I'm thinking of going with Royal Purple. I'll probably do it tomarrow evening or Tuesday. I'll let you know what I think of it after I have it in.

Ok, after draining my fluid and putting in the royal purple I was quite surprised. The change was very noticable. The shifting was easier and the 1-2 shift that I had the most trouble in smooth. Even when I redlined it in first and shifted into second, which normally gave me a little resistance that could almost feel like I didn't pull it into gear far enough. This change could also be due to the fact that I had the right weight in the tranny, because before it was a bit overful (sapposedly) and it had a good deal of 80-90w. So, you can take it with a grain of salt, but my initial thoughts on it are really good. I'll update more when I get back up to washington were it topped out at -1 degrees F at high noon yesterday. that will be a good test for this stuff.

I have some other notes from my change that I'm going to post in the Driveline section because it fits more over there.

I bought it at Reibes. They were the only place that carried the gear oil. You can get it online for cheaper, though. It was $8.67/qrt there.

The "grinding synchros" topic has a link to the royal purple website, and on there are a bunch of online venders. I bought it from a store because I didn't want to wait.

Hmm...I should probably go ahead and replace my MT oil, if I speed shift from 1st to 2nd it will crunch a little. Maybe it would help.

I guess I can do this when I replace my nasty brake fluid, huh, vrg3.

Hehe, yeah... your brake fluid is nasty.

Actually, I had an idea of how to make a cheap vacuum brake bleeder... I'll test it out and if it works I'll post about it. Should make changing fluid quick and easy and cost less than the fluid.

A little off topic but at the lube shop I used to work at we'd put a shop vac over the oil filler hole and pull out the drain plug and no oil would come out. That way we could replace a leaking washer if it was still under its 3000 mile mark. I was always surprised it worked, but it makes sense.

Ok, I've been driving it a while now, and I have to say I've noticed a decidedly good change in the shifting. I'm sold on this stuff for now. My brother drove my car and came back saying that he could tell. He doesn't even drive it that often.
