General Exclaim UHP ( 205/55-R16) tires.

Post by legacy92ej22t »

I finally got my new rims (pre MY05 LGT) and tires mounted and thought I'd post up about the performance of these super cheap tires!

Back ground is that I needed a good cheap tire and after doing some research I found that these were the #1 rated tire at Tirerack.com in this size as well as being the cheapest! That's right, the cheapest, only $62 each! The only complaint about them was that they had a bit of sidewall flex.

I've been running them for two days now and all I can say is WOW! These tires are sticky as hell! They do have a bit of sidewall flex but it's not bad at all and they perform very well. I'm only running 35 psi in them so I might try 40 psi and see if that cures the soft sidewall at all. If it does, then these tires will be just about the best I've ever run.

:D

The proper size for your Legacy SS is 205/50/16. Is there a reason you went with the 55 series tire?

Yeah, I know and yes. The wrx comes with the 205/55/16 and that's what I was running prior because the wrx wheels I bought had brand new re92's on them and I wanted to wear them out before buying new tires. I liked that size better then OEM. My speedometer is actually more acurate in 205/55/16 then 195/60/15 or 205/50/16 as well. I also don't have to shift as soon in this size either. The smaller diameter would accelerate faster but I have enough power that the larger size doesn't effect acceleration too bad and I attain higher speeds in each gear before shifting. Me likes it. :D

Oh and there is also very slim pickings in 205/50/16. 205/55/16 has a much better selection.

OK, it rained like hell here today so I got to try these out in the rain. All I can say is DOUBLE WOW WOW!!!! These have excellent wet traction. I'm very, very impressed so far.

I was able to take a corner today, that I take daily on the way to work, faster in a torential down pour then I ever could bone dry out with the re92's. The car felt like it was on rails!

So later tonight on the way home I wanted to see what it would take to break them loose in the rain, so I went into a city corner ( 90 degree right turn, regular 2 lane to 2 lane road) at about 35-40 mph and just wipped it without braking and tried to take the corner as sharp as possible. I got the front to push just barely and then the tires grabbed hard and took me right on through. Impressive.

I've been researching these on TireRack and they ARE simply the best kept secret around...They rate in the low to mid 8's and the high 8s in the wet. These are number similar to the Bridgestone S03 and Good Eagles etc. that cost at least twice at much. I can't wait to grab a set of these this winter (the rainy season here in Seattle) and head to the track. Thanks for pointing out the General to us! Keep us posted if they scrub off in few thousand and ARE too good to be true! Cheers, Adam

Sorry, just noticed this.

The tires are still doing very nicely. I haven't ran them on gravel though at all, sorry. The wet traction is sooooo good. Dry traction is still very nice but not quite as sticky as they were at first.

Overall I give them an 8 out of 10. For the price they are definitely 11 out of 10!
