EDM E-Code '92-94 Headlights

Post by farfrumwork »

So I was lucky enough to win a pair of *barely used* EDM E-Code headlights off ebay (from a board member). These lights are in near perfect condition!

Here are some pics in the garage just after I got them in
ewwww, old usdm lights

mmm, E-code

Image

Before I installed the E-codes, I went out and got some shots of the stock USDM lights. They have 89kmi, some pitting, but are relatively clear (not yellow anyhow). I'm also running Osram 65/70w bulbs.
After some quick adjustments (they are not perfect, but I'll fiddle and get them where I like them soon enough) I reproduced the original photos (of stock lights) with the e-codes.

Enjoy---

Now, the above photos are on the point and shoot mode, but the following shots were taken in manual mode with exactly the same shutter speed, fstop, and whatnot. I marked a spot in my street so the car was in the same spot as well.

I think the pictures speak for themselves. I am very pleased, and can only imagine that it'll get better once I aim things a bit more. They do throw a relatively narrow swath of light, but it's not a pencil beam or anything that severe (not much less than stock). Some fogs may help in that dept some day...

A harness is next, to try to get even a bit more outta the things. And I'll be wirring the city lights to run off the parking lights soon too - that'll be tits!

Yeah....I was very impressed with the EDM lights.

The light cutoff is much more sharp. In addition, the amount of light they throw directly in front of the car and to the cutoff point is A LOT better.

I did a relay setup with mine & hooked them directly to the battery......you'll like the results!

It's cool having the city lights :)

Definitly a improvement, but try some silverstars, and make the lights aim a little higher. Then it will be substantually more bright, still didn't look much brighter them my stock headlights to be honest. :?

I can't wait to get a relay harness, I know there is some voltage left on the table as the stock connectors are really fugly. I should take some quick measurements to see where I sit today...

And it's hard to get good pictures of light output, that's why I took some manual mode (to try to control how the shot is metered by the camera). But there is a LOT more light being thrown on the ground than with the stock lights, you can clearly see it in the pics above (look at the forground between stock and EDM 8) ). And the cutoff is nuts, it throws a wall of light way out into the distance where the stock units light just faded into nothing.

Other than that, yes the lights were a smidge low at the time of photos. They probably need a bit of L/R adjustment too.
But no, Silverstars will not be brighter than the overwattage Osrams (high beam wattage on low beam filament) that are in there. I have some Phillips Vision Plus I could put back in as an experiment, but these Osrams have more output - period.

I can't wait until I get my lights.

My uncle managed to score me a set off of a friend from europe. I may soon have a comparison between stock '91 lights and '91 EDM lights.

Did they come in Subaru boxes? If so what were the part numbers?

How hard was the install - direct fit? Any spacing issues?

I have a present (and quick) need for headlamps - my car just failed VA inspection for bad adjusted / unbracketed headlamp in a front left slightly wrecked corner (after passing for the past 5 years with the same headlight).

Anyway, would LOVE some of these E-code's and the Osrams. Can anyone recommend a way I could lay my hands on either / both ASAP? My 15 day pink-slip starts ticking tomorrow!

Thanks,
Matt

The model name or SKU/part number for the best and brightest Osrams would be great - I see:

Osram/Sylvania Headlight Bulb (standard) - $10
Osram/Sylvania Halogen - SilverStar (avoid?) - $24
Osram/Sylvania Halogen - Cool Blue - $17
Osram/Sylvania Halogen - XtraVision - $15

They all say 65W.

The best osrams are the silverstars.

Sylvania silverstars are different and tinted, which is why they suck. Anything with "cool blue" or "the look of HID," or "100w equivalent" just means that they're tinted to look better but are not actually brighter.

Xtravisions are the next best thing you can buy in a parts store.

If you want the Osrams, e-mail Daniel Stern. He sells them or their equivalents (ie Narva Rangepower +50).

I also can't stress enough how important good aim is. The above EDM lights are aimed too close together.

go here to buy those lights and learn more about lighting:

Yeah, these shots were the night I installed them. They have much more spread now (the drivers light is more straight) and I aimed them up a bit too. It vastly improved the light on the road.

I'm sure they could use a bit more tweaking... I'll get back at that now that it's coming into winter and I've have more darkeness to contend with.

as for the Osrams, these are the 70/65 Hyper bulbs (not DOT - came from Europe) all DOT lights will say 65w, but that's the high beam - these are 65w Low/70w High.

see my review and a couple pics here:
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... ight=osram

if that doesn't work search for osram in the electrical section.

I had these as a first step toward better lighting and they do throw more light out than stock - and I've tried a bunch of "good" bulbs, not any HID wannabes...

are these glass or are they plastic? I might be willing to pay some money for the E codes as that is what I run in all my non subies. If they are glass then they could run much brighter bulbs. As I understand it heat is the biggest factor preventing higher wattage bulbs.

Honestly I don't know... haha

I know this is weird, but I have not had high beams on this car for 3+yrs now. Somthing is whack with the combo-switch and it turns on the high beams randomly so I pulled the leads on the H4 connectors.

I keep planning on getting a used switch, but seem to find other uses for my time/money - and yea I know, I REALLY should have high beams for safety reasons. But it is fairly rare that I wish I had highs (not out in the middle of nowhere that often as lame as that is), especially with these EDM's.

I DID get the city lights hooked up though :)
Wired them to the parking lights - it's cool.

anyone have a spare combo switch for cheap? haha
