Mishimoto Oil Catch Can

After noticing some oil in my intercooler, charge pipe and PCV lines over the last year, I thought an oil catch can would be a good addition to my setup. I looked at what some WRX guys run and found some nice Subaru specific parts from Crawford and Grimmspeed. I didn't want to spend more than $100 so I looked at some more universal fit parts.

I went with Mishimoto part number MMOCC-RB for a few reasons.
1. I liked the size and black finish.
2. The top and bottom caps can be taken off in case I want to thoroughly clean it or change media.
3. The Inlet and Outlet fittings thread on and seem pretty standard so I could potentially find different sizes so I don't need adapters/reducers.
4. The machining and quality looked good

I wanted to pop the top off to see what kind of baffling setup was in use. I couldn't find any good pictures of one disassembled online.

The inlet and outlet are basically side by side.

The main chamber had nothing inside, I was definitely expecting some kind of baffling or media. Will this be effective? There were some machined slots along the inside perimeter near the ends, which made me think maybe some components are missing from the inside. Any thoughts? The only other reason for these I can think of is if the body of the part was originally designed for some other use and is adapted into catch can. At work we have some pneumatic cylinders that look very similar.

I may put some stainless steel scrubbing pads inside to gain a little surface area. I figure I may as well try it for a little while and see if it actually collects any oil.

I feel like it would just suck any oil right thru the top nipples and not collect any oil.

Nice feedback on the catch can.

You can try the SS scrubbing pads to see if that makes any difference. If you could provide some sort of tubing that would direct the vapors into the pads/mesh that would likely make it more effective. That's always been somewhat of an issue having the inlet & outlet holes right next to each other.

Other thing to note, I would recommend replacing the white Teflon tape on there with yellow Teflon tape that is rated for petroleum. The white tape will degrade over time in the presence of oil. Here's some pics of the tape.

That looks so well made its ashame its all hollow. I might pick one up so I can add my own media to it.

Yea it's a real nice looking part, I don't think it would be too hard to modify it into a nice performing part. There's lots of screen/mesh options out there that are easy enough to cut down and fit inside, the tougher part is directing crankcase fumes into the bottom of the can.

I might try to come up with a tube fitting that has nipples on both ends, so it can thread into the existing hole and you can run a tube on the inside into the bottom of the can. Hopefully there is something off the shelf out there, I always search McMaster Carr first, if not I may be able to come up with something on a lathe.
