Team IAC's 94 SS @ Nasa-ne Road Race Season Opener
Well in our first points race of the year Team IAC driving our 1994 Subaru Legacy Turbo Sport Sedan won the PTE Class at the NASA Northeast Season Opener! After having some setbacks during winter testing at NASA-MA's VIR races where we suffered from a front wheel bearing failure as well as a cracked downpipe which caused boost creep. Since Feb the team has worked on a new exhuast system and wheel bearing repairs. It all came together and after arriving at 5am in Beaver Falls, PA we were ready to race! Qualifying 23 out 30 cars and first out of 2 cars in the PTE class Adam Mouradian would move ahead steadily throughout the race up to the 19th position overall and nearly a 1/2 a lap ahead of the 2nd place Saturn SC2 in PTE.
Sunday would prove to be a more interesting day for the team. We decided to run the Yokohama A048R med-hard compound tires that were fairly worn for practice and this didn't fare well. Adam locked up the wheels at one point toward the end of practice and slid stright off the track T-boning the armco. Luckily we still had a majority of the steel bumper beam left in the car so there was only minor cosmetic damage. The team decided to attempt to qualify for the race using the Yoks and as a result started 26 out of 27 in the grid for Sunday's race. For the race we switched back to the Kumho 710s and Adam moved steadily up from 26th past the Saturn #93 our PTE competitor up to 20th out of 27.
Overall this was a really great boost for the Team and for Subaru in general. Realize that this car has 150k miles on the drivetrain which is unchanged from stock right down to the paper air filter!
Mods list includes:
FHI 4-pot front Brakes, JIC Coilovers, Turbo-back exhaust, and 2.5RS Rims.
The team is very excited about the season ahead and look forward to going to the NASA Nationals in Sept at the Mid-Ohio Raceway where we will hopefully take the podium in PTE.
Special thanks to our Sponsors including Subaru, Putnam Signs, Leeberbs Tinting, AZP Installs, K&S Brakes and IAC, Inc. This race and all our races are dedicated to Michael Dassing our Crew Chief who was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years ago and never made it to this our inaugural season.

Thanks! It's been a long time in the making, and it's awsome to be out there racing with a nearly stock subie with like 150k miles on it! We'll be heading to NASA Nationals so hopefully we'll be carrying the 1st Gen Legacy Banner to a new level!DLC wrote:Great work!

We can't even begin to put into words what it means to us knowing that the team has dedicated all their races in Michael's name. Though Michael is not with you in body; I'm sure he was there in spirit! Just as he'll be there with you during the season and on the podium in PTE. Way to go!!!

Thanks Terri and Steve! We always know Mikey is with us at every turn! I am glad you found the site here, I will be getting the Team site back up shortly! Mikey has always been and will continue to be the anchor of the team. Heck he was at the shop at 3am when the racecar (before it was a racecar) was delivered from Texas to us because I was working overnights and couldn't be there. Rest assured that he is our co-pilot throughout the season!Tdassing wrote:We can't even begin to put into words what it means to us knowing that the team has dedicated all their races in Michael's name. Just an update! We actually won NASANE's PTE Class this year!
Didn't make it to OH for the Nationals but so far so good.
Hopefully this coming year will be better, although it will likely be a building year getting some of the rookie drivers up to speed.

Awesome! The above shot has made it into my screen saver shots.
Can you post more links to photos of your car - interior set up? This year's mods? etc.
Also let us know what the PTE class is all about - what cars you end up racing and who you can hang with that's not even in your class....
And did that Honda ever get past you? Doesnt' look like it.
Cheers,
AW

All our pics are here:

This year we plan to put in an SAFCII, Sway Bars F/R, paint the roll cage, and generally get things into a spiffy state able to be shown as a racecar so we can get some sponsors. We may pull the motor and do the timing belt as it hasn't been done since 100k. Maybe buy a new stock turbo for it.
As for other cars in our class, let's see, SERs (old ones), Saturn SL2, Acura Integras. In our class we basically outpower most of the cars but we also out weigh them, so it's really a toss up. On the long tracks we do well, the shorter the worse we do.
One interesting thing is that the rear brakes with the Hawk Blacks were too much, kept locking them up. The 4-pot FHI fronts we ran Hawk Blues and went through 1/2 a set through about a 8 or 9 races. So we are gonna go back to stock rear pads.
I'll post more as time goes on!

Oh and that Honda is one of our former teamates. He went to the dark side and we've been locked in a battle with him for a few years. Just like in Indiana Jones we have a great quote "Dr. Jones, what was once briefly your's is now mine!" Hee Hee.
That's a HC-5 Car, decent car but poor driver. In that race, he actually hit us even though we gave him plenty of room to pass. Unfortunately he's bad at phsyics, didn't realize a 1600lb car was not going to push a 3100lb car off the track. He bounced off us and into the infield. We kept going, my driver radioed in and said "did they put a speed bump in turn 6?"

Yeah, I saw that picture - funny. We was going staight for sure...
Speaking of going straight - understeer. I'm doing a bit of track with my car (lapping days and hill climbs) and I'm strongly considering this modification. New suspension part from Whiteline - raised balljoints that help understeer, increase contact patch in front, help with alignment, etc.
Check them out...

Sounds like you can do suspension mods and still be kosher in your class.

That's really awesome guys. I hope to be doing that someday when I'm not in crippling debt from school (instead I'll be in crippling debt from a race car).
6-gun racing sells a kit to convert to the 05+ sti bearings for under a grand. They'll even mill the spindles for more negative camber.
Might be something for you to look into.
I'll overlook the JICs for now.

How do you go about being a lawyer for NASA? I would like to be a lawyer for NASA. However, is it really in my hands to choose wherever I work? I know I need a background in earth science, but I'm confused about the process of becoming one. Which University is better for jump starting this career? University of Texas or Pennsylvania State? Would I gain a nice lifestyle from it?
