1/4 mi runs, '93 5spd VF12/AWIC/CES

Post by farfrumwork »

So I got out for the last Test and Tune session of the year here at Bandimere.

For those not from CO - this track is at ~6000ft ASL, so turbo times are about 0.5sec and 4+mph off sea level times (NA are about 2x that)

Anyway on to the results! 4 runs (it was packed!!)

-----60'------330'----1/8mi (et/trap)---1000'----1/4mi (et/trap)

1) 2.210, 6.456, 9.963/70.58, 12.972, 15.540/88.29

2) 2.119, 6.301, 9.792/70.83, 12.802, 15.364/88.38

3) 2.003, 6.203, 9.664/71.36, 12.653, 15.187/89.36

4) 1.994 :-D , 6.129, 9.581/71.69, 12.555, 15.083/89.79

I call that 15flat@90mph 8)

Temp started at 75F and ended at 65F.

My 60's were 2.2/2.1 when I tried to launch at ~4500rpm, then dropped to 2.0/1.99 launching at 5500-6000rpm after rolling through the water box - I could do this consistantly now knowing what to launch at (and with some "wetted" tires).

I was REALLY happy to keep getting better and better times. There was a lot of down time between runs (30min-1hr) so I could cool off the A/W fluid between runs.

I was missing in 3rd gear around 5700rpm on Every run too, unfortunately. I could feel the car stop pulling/hickup then I'd shift to 4th at ~6000rpm. This definitely hurt my traps - bet they could be 91mph with a clean pull in 3rd.

Mods:
VF12 (14psi between 3,000-4,500 in 3rd - 11.5/12psi past 4500)
custom A/W IC
3" catted CES
UD Pulley
desnorkeled stock air box
WRX wheels/205/50/16 falken 451's
some suspension stuff that doesn't really matter....

Thanks man, yeah the 60' is make or break.

some other fun facts -

My car weighs 3060lbs with 1/2 tank gas and the spare/jack removed.

A well driven stock Sti will run 13.8@100 at this track (Evo MR about the same).
A less than well driven new GT500 Cobra convertible ran 13.8@100 last night.
Most GSR's with I/H/E will run 16.5@85-86 at this track.
The best stock 2.0l wrx time I've seen here is 15@90, but have seen as low as 16.3@86.... hell I saw a new Sti run 14.7@94

A killer VR4 was there last night with bike racks on top and totally stock looking - he ran 12.6@112  soo sweeet

Nice passes, I'm glad to be around sea level (thick air=no power loss).
Good info on the car's weight too.

Have you narrowed down the 3rd gear miss?

I had a GVR4, & these were not hard to get down to 12.8's @ sea level.
The VR4 your talking about sounds like it was well modded to get that time @ 6000ft.

No, I have no idea what the missing is in 3rd. I've experienced this before, but it is more apparent on the track where I'm on it gear after gear, run after run.

It can happen in 4th as well on the street if I pull 2nd and 3rd gear out - it'll just fall on it's face in 4th (sometimes)

I imagine it's getting some knock and pulling timing, especially that night since it kept happening around 5700rpm. But I don't know what to do about it besides some kind of EM (which I want anyway, but is ways out). Would 1step colder plugs help? maybe the KS is a bit sensitive? (could try a replacement and see I suppose).

any ideas?

I'm not sure, but maybe the car is running a little lean & EGT's are climbing on the longer runs as a result.

Do you have any idea where your AFR or EGT is?

Are you shifting @ 6K?

If you are you may want to experiment short shifting @ about 52-5500RPM - this helped knock off some time on my 5spd. OBS-t.

I'd actually do this on 2 & 3rd gear, & run 4th out to the timing lights if possible.

I run 1st out to near redline (it happens so fast)
2nd to maybe 6200
3rd to 6000
4th through trap

I'll try some different shift points next year when the track reopens. Maybe just a few 100 rpms earlier on the 2-3 and 3-4 shift. Some dyno plots would help me see if it would work or not (sometime tjis winter hopefully)

Yup a dyno or 2 would definately help in finding the best shift point.

Good looking times man, I cant imagine running at that elevation.

One point of courtesy i noticed though. Pulling to the line with wet tires is kind of frowned upon. Many high horsepower cars can feel some ill effects from left over water.
Probably doesnt matter much for street night / T&T days.

So any more mods planned for when spring time rolls around? Unfortunately all the plans i had for last winter are waiting until this one, ugh bills  good to see subis putting up nice times.

yeah, most AWD's go around the water box - however, even the cars that "use" the box roll their non-drive wheels through it and subsequently carry water to the line anyhow.

And most that "use" the box sit in it and throw all kinds of water into their wheel wells and what not (people with street tires trying to "heat" them - haha), which then is trasfered to the line too... There are also 2-3 guys with mops standing around.

I appreciate your input, but I just don't think it's an issue, especially on a T&T night like you said.

for mods before spring.... probably nothing power related. I'm picking up some 2.5RS springs soon, and will be getting some 22mm F/R sways too.
Engine management is the next thing for power (hopefully next year sometime), which might entail some injectors and a MAF with more range.
