i went to the track

Post by NICO »

i dont know why i went, but i did!

R/T ---- .278
60' ----- 1.958
330 ----- 5.473
1/8 ----- 8.400
MPH ----- 84.39
1000 ----- 10.934
1/4 ----- 13.074
MPH ----- 105.50

my only problem, 1st gear + 2nd gear peeling out.

set as is:

bigger 16g@17psi
550cc sti injectors
ej20g ej22t = stock stuff
aps 725 fmic
aps 3.5 ex system, no cats
maxim syms equel length headers
sti 6mt, sti diff 3.900
sti brembos, v7 wheels 17lbs
P Zero 215 45 17 tires
car is stripped down to shell
12l sti tank, full takes 4 jugs
autronic ecu
j&s Safe guard
perrin water meth pump in trunk

car as it is bye looking at it
Image

my question is for this set up, how could i get faster? rasing boost? slicks? does my q-mile driving suck?

for me its just to hard to watch that tree light work. if they used a traffic light for the tree i think i would be better, looking at yellow lights an then green? trips me right out. if it was red yellow green i think i could get a better time.

Damn, that car looks amazing! Love the old school hood vents.

That reaction time is pretty damn good, but the trick is to watch the tree as the cars ahead of you line up and mentally get the timing down in your head. When you stage, watch the tree and hit it just before the green should come up. You shouldn't really see the green at all. You risk red lighting, but that's the trick. Works for either pro tree or whatever the other tree is called (one lights up all the yellows at once, the other runs down the yellow lights one at a time). Do you know about tripping the beams? You can roll into the stage from behind or you can roll ahead of it and back in. I'm not sure it makes much difference in a regular car, but rolling in from behind gives you a higher trap speed and backing into the beams gives you a faster ET.

BAC5.2 : thank you lol, i dont even know why i whent.

evolutionmovement : its really hard to get that timein the lights down in my head, you are right i wait for the green then go.

this is a what a tuned stock sti did next to me

R/T-------.141
60'--------1.790
330-------5.537
1/8-------8.611
MPH------81.04
1000-----11.278
1/4-------13.483
MPH------104.18

when we both took off, he would own me till i got in 3rd gear and then passed him like a missle, but we whent so hard i hit 245kms at the end just to show him my car keeps on going an going an going.

whats a good tire so i dont peel out, or could it be becuse it was a cold night?

Cold won't help. There's not much you can do with AWD unless you get tire warmers. I think an old trick used to be to put bleach on tires just before running to kind of gum them up and they use it in the burn out boxes (or at least used to) for the same reason. The burn out box doesn't do much for you unless you want to risk losing the transmission to warm up the tires, but you could try just pouring it on your tires (if they allow it) just before a run since it partly melts the rubber.

GOOD Time NICO - especially for a 16G @ conservative boost levels !!!

I got a .130 reaction time in SUPER SLOW last time out on the track - (I'm rusty).
All you have to do is go when the last amber light turns on.
Your reaction time does not affect your E/T.

Your 60' time seems a little slow, I've done 1.84-5's with my OBS-T & it has alot less HP than you do.
I'd practice launching the car properly as every .1 off your 60' time should knock about .2 off you 1/4 mile ET.

You should be @ the high 1.7s - low 1.8s which should knock about .3-.4 off your ET.

What are your shift point RPMs?

Tire pressure can have a pretty big impact on grip/slip....

Your trap speed is about dead on for the time. You may get down to about 12.7ish, but your trap isnt going to go up much till you start making more power.

I think the 6spd may be slowing et's down a bit, but a 12.7 second pass should be left in the car.

+1 on what DV said about the trap speeds, they are a good indicator of times that should have been run even when traction affects ET due to wheelspin or bog.
84MPH @ the 1/8 mile mark is not bad, if you look @ DV's 12.5 second pass data you'll see he records about the same 1/8 MPH, but top end is a little slow to get to a 12.5 based on Nico's pass data.

Check out the Optimum Shift Point Calculator. You'll need a dyno run.

I was looking @ a video of Big Valley's STi (9 sec battle STi Vs Supra) & they shift 3 times during the pass & wind up with a 14x MPH trap speed.

Not sure if they are still using the 6 speed, but if they are they're launching in 2nd gear which is an old RWD/FWD trick to control wheelspin, heck even if they are on a 5spd I think they may be launching in 2nd gear to get to 14x MPH / 9.4 second ets...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mdGapOO ... re=related

Nico, have you ever tried launching in 2nd?

I also saw a vid of "la rata" per my friend's urging, that WRX looks pretty good, 1.6s 60's & 9 second 1/4 mile times.
My buddy said it was FWD, but looking @ the vid it is AWD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXxl4e4g ... re=related

My buddy's get track time update calls on the "quick cars" from PR about 2x a week, they know I like street cars so they feed info to me on the slower full bodied cars & these 2 Subarus come up every now & then.

That pass was not too bad, you can see your car catch up to the STi.

Was this your first time out on a 1/4mile track NICO?

If it was I would not worry too much about the times, it takes some practice to get the best times you can out of a car.

Ok,

You are definately in the 12.xxx for sure, 108 is good for almost a 12.2 if you are PERFECT!!!!!!! However I myself have a best of 12.5 @ 112 and I am pretty damn good at the shifting game, so there is more to it than just shifting.....

But finally some proof that you can go fast!!

You will get there!

thanks douglas vincent, i am going to try a couple more times at this, but when i go on a friday i can only run like 3 time becuse there is just so many pepole out there.

i would like it if i could run up and down no stopping just to see what works and what does not work.

i think my first second gear change is ok third fourth i got to shift at like 5500rpm, not let it red line then shift. my 12.8 run i shifted a little bit early to see what would happen and sure a nuff it worked.

tried agian did a couple things diffrent and it worked out a little bit better. no red light and i maxed out fifth where i think i could shift in to 6th and hit even a faster time, ill try that next time.

also i lowerd my tire pressure to 30psi and i stuck all right.

http://s29.photobucket.com/player.swf?f ... &os=1&ap=1

i whent to give it one more time and i broke my front cv shaft and i could not run another run after that, first for everything and this was my first broken cv shaft.

time to get some sti knuckels up front and swap them in, then i can use the sti thick cv shafts!!
