Clutch Pedal Problem

Post by William D. Robinson »

I respectfully beg to differ with Adam Z1, but if we are talking about a
Legacy Turbo, there most definitely is an adjustment for the pedal freeplay
and it relates to that pedal sticking phenomenon. It is (in USA models)
right above the throttle pedal. If it is set with too much freeplay, your
return spring will not overcome the ill-conceived over-center spring
contraption. While you have it apart, note how after a certain point it
pulls the pedal down flat to the floor. You will understand it when it is
apart. It is designed to make it easier for a weak person to depress the
clutch.

Use a 12mm wrench to loosen the jamnut and pull out the cotter pin and
remove the clevis pin. This is a threaded shaft with a yoke that holds the
clevis pin. Rotate the yoke to lengthen or shorten the working length of
the rod. A longer rod means less pedal freeplay. The owners manual
specifies a correct freeplay, but I prefer to adjust it so the clevis pin
just rattles freely. Never miss an opportunity to grease that mechanism when
you are under there.

Subaru makes a replacement spring for that piece of crap, but it is still a
piece of crap. When you get the chance it is best to completely eliminate
that over-center mechanism and just add a return spring of your own liking.

A cheap, easy temporaty fix is to put a worm-drive hose clamp around the
clutch pedal shaft and hook a couple of tiny elastic bungee cords from the
hose clamp to whatever you can hook on the underside of the steering column.
This isn't a forever fix, but it will allow you to complete a road trip or
whatever.

Thanks Bill and Adam, a person in CenterForce send me an e-mail
about how to adjust the hydrulic system and I don't really
understand it, but I will try Bill method , if it still won't help,
then I have to send back the pressure plate for warranty.
I will let you guys know when I don't the fix!

Not sure how it works on the Leagcy (would have to look at my car tomorrow), but on my GVR4, it basically has a threaded rod for the clutch pedal...the further towards the end of the rod you put the adjuster, the more release you get and the higher the clutch release point becomes.
