INTERCOOL / HELP!!!

Post by FREDERICK.WHITMORE@CN.CA »

Yes, I mean the Subaru part #.

Check out the actual price of the used IC's. You're saying about $150.00 US??
I'm in Toronto so I need to do the conversion plus I'd also have to factor in
shipping charges and duty!!!

Let me know Adam.

On a Side Note:

Yesterday I was inspecting my engine bay given my curiosity with an
intercooler. Stupid me I started touching the coolant hose that leads to that
stupid plastic coolant tank that supposedly intrudes on the intercooler
(without much pressure mind you)!!! Next thing I know the hose comes off and
coolant is spilling everywhere!! I heard you guys complain about this tank
and now I have a first hand experience. I had no problems with my coolant
tank prior to my touchy hands getting involved. The nipple of the coolant
tank broke apart leaving a section of it still logged in the hose and the
remainder still attached to the tank.

My solution was to Crazy Glue the nipple back together! So far so good! No
leaks! Do you guys think the Crazy Glue will hold it together??

Thanks,
Fred

Well, just keep your eye on it.

I had the same things with my car when we did the IC install...and stupid me, I had the Ic again yesterday for the Samco hoses, and forgot to trim the other tab off so I caould swing the coolant bottle back the way it should be!! I used a 2 part epoxy that has been holding up well, but also will be ordering the alloy one anyway

My car is screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!
Earlier in the week I told u guys about my coolant tank that I used Crazy Glue
on!! Well when I was leaving work I realized that it didn't work for long!
Coolant was all over the ground. I drove it to my mechanic watching the temp.
gauge and when it got close to the Danger zone I shut it down, let it cool and
then continued to my mechanic which wasn't far away at all!! We put a new
plastic nipple in the hole where the old one was filled it up with coolant and
it was good to go!

Now my problem the next day I think is unrelated! But when driving home from
work again (all hoses attached this time, temp normal) after a touch of decent
acceleration I coasted to a stop at a red light. The car started idling
rough and almost stalling as the revs dropped. I kept it alive by hitting the
gas and then noticed the car sounded loud! I moved off and the car felt very
sluggish too! Oil fine, temp normal, and coolant fine! I was able to make it
home. I was having a hard time figuring out if the noise was coming from the
engine or the exhaust! When I shut down the car it would restart first turn!
When I parked I looked under the car and my Highflow cat (put it on last year,
and I also have a 3 inch exhaust, MBC 12PSI, no intercooler) was RED HOT!!!
It was like someone was torching it!!!!!

Yesterday, I was gg to drive it to my mechanic (who put on the cat). It
started first turn again but I decided I wasn't gg to hit the gas and the car
stalled after a few seconds!!! Now it won't restart anymore! I had to tow
it to my mechanic. I don't know what he found yet.

Does anyone have any idea WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO MY CAR????????????
I'm stressed and frightened it might be big $$$$
Thanks guys,
FRED

Sounds like the cat is plugged up, which is causing too much backpressure, restricting the exhaust and making the car run like shit.....not to mention.....overheating the cat.

It's possible that during the time you were running the car hot, you overheated the cat, and the honeycomb structure inside melted and is now plugging up the works. That's the only connection I can see between the two......but I'd probably let the mechanic tell you that....because you might be able to swing a new cat if it's bad for free if he doesn't make that diagnosis.

Thanks for the reply Josh!

My mechanic says he can't figure out what is wrong because he can't even get
the car to start!!!
I'm trying to figure out why it won't start. He wants to replace the ignition
module as he says there is no spark! But I know that the ignition was working
perfectly fine before all of this drama!
I remember on my moms old 1981 Subaru the battery went dead. And because we
kept on trying to start it we burt out some "link" but I can't remember the
name. Do you guys know what I am talking about?? Once we spliced a new wire
to resume the connection it was fine.

I'm guessing Subaru still has this same type of link on my '92 Legacy Turbo.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I don't feel my igniton module needs
replaceing and I don't want to be wasting my money!

Thanks Guys,

Fred

Tell him to unbolt the exhaust somewhere before the cat........did you
tell him about the glowing cat converter? Was it actually glowing
red??

I'm assuming the car turns over correct? Have someone turn it over, and
someone else put their hand down by the exhaust pipe. See if you feel
air coming out.

I highly doubt the ignition is to blame. There is no link on the newer
models. It's all electronic based. You have the igniter which gets
signal from ECU, which then sends signal to coil pack which generates
your spark. Very basic setup.

Here, he can check the coil pack against these instructions from FSM.

You really need to look at what originally happened, and what could have
caused the failure or problem you are seeing now. There is a
possibility of them being unrelated.....but more then likely, they are.

According to the Subaru dealer I called there is a Fuseable Link close to the
battery.
He's trying to tell me that they did tests and it's the ignition module that
is bad. And he said that there is spark to the coil. But all of this doesn't
make any sense to me!!! I told him about the cat and "yes" it was glowing
red!!!!!

I'm thinking if the ignition is bad it's because of the cat glowing problem
right????

This module is says is $250 CAD! And I don't think this is really the culprit!

Confused Fred

When you say ignition module. Do you mean the igniter?

The ignition path is: ECU => Igniter => Ignition Coil => Plugs

If you have spark at the coil pack......your igniter is fine.....there
is nothing else between the mix.

I think there is a fusible link in the fuse box under the hood. (Near
the washer reservoir)

HELP!!!

It did happened to me once, I did open up the scoop but forgot to
warp or hide the igniter. One day it was rain and I went out to pick
up my sister. After stop in the parking lot and restart the car, it
goes like shacking like hell, then I try to drive home and see what
happened.
It just 10 mins drive and when back home I pop up the hood and found
out the cat that after in the downpipe are red hot, so I take the
other risk to drive to my mechanic.
We found my car only running 2 cylinder and the car can't go higher
then 3000rpm. Then, he put another coil pack to the car but it still
running the same so we though its not the problem of the coil then
we though it might be the problem of the ignitor since water got
inside the ingitor and it made it short circut.
Next day, I wend to junkyard and found out there is a Legacy LS
wagon and it has the same parts # and pin as like my turbo , so I
took it and put it back to my car and the car back to normal
instanly.
If the cat were plug on your car, you will know while you driving.
Just my opinion.

Cats can get that hot and glow for a number of reasons. A lot of
misfiring can let unburned or partially burned fuel-air mixture into
the exhaust. These excess gases will continue to burn as they exit
the combustion chamber creating heat in the exhaust. The cat is the
biggest restriction in the exhaust and will also try to convert the
excess emissions. Both of these will cause the cat to get hotter and
hotter and you get a heat sink that glows red. I've also seen this
happen from running too rich (very rich tho') and from a plugged cat
(usually only happens when the wrong fuel was used or crappy fuel for
a long time). Hope this helps.

I am happy to say my car is up and running again!!!
Thanks a lot for your incite guys!!!

When my mechanic said "ignition module" he really meant "igniter module". He
replaced it and it's running perfectly again. So I had exactly the same
problem as Ben. I'm pretty sure my car wasn't running on all cylinders
either. But damn that tiny part is expensive.

I'm thinking I might have short-circuited the module. The day before all of
this I had the coolant tank problem and decided to spray some water on my
engine to rinse off the spilled coolant. So maybe some water messed up the
module or it was just a weird coincidence.

Douglas: as you can see you are not the only one with a bad luck streak
going. I fixed my car stereo this weekend finally figuring out it was only a
loose power wire on my amplifier that has forced me to sing to myself for the
past two weeks. And to top it all off yesterday while at a friends place it
turns out someone was eying my car. When I was leaving (in broad day light)
as soon as I stepped outside I noticed something was missing from my grill!!!
Yep, my Subaru emblem was stolen yesterday!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what the
hell I did to deserve all of this drama but it's really pissing me off!!!!!!
I guess Subaru's are getting popular these days. Who needs BMW emblems
anymore, it's all about Subaru now! Ohh yeah and just for good measure the
flip on my cell phone broke over the weekend too!!!
