Electrical Problem

Hey guys. Looking for some input. Today my 93 2.2L Non-Turbo has 2
electrical problems. 1) It seems that my alternater has gone out.
It's strange though it can back this morning and was charging @ 30
amps but now it's not. Drawing all power from batt. Has anyone had an
alt. go out then come back? Could it be a relay? Where should I
start in the trouble shooting? 2) At the same time it also has
created a short. When the brake pedal is depressed the running lights
come on!! Are the 2 problems related? Has anyone else experianced a
short like this?

FYI, My original alternator died at 145K miles with no warning. It
took 15 mins to swap it yourself. Cost: $180 from Strass auto with
lifetime warranty.
