Legacy Final Drive Ratios

I work at a automotive technical hot line. When that technician at the local repair facility needs information or assistance in diagnostics, I’m the guy he might call. It is a subscription service for professional repair facilities.

I specialize in Asian imports.

I’m a Sr. Master Subaru Technician.

Within easy reach, I have the factory manuals from 1980 to 2002-2003 for all Asian makes.

Todd,

Welcome to the list. Glad to have someone of your background perusing around :)

If you want, check out www.bbs.legacycentral.org It's essentially an extension of this list. We sorta out grew the initial yahoo setup and wanted more, so that board was created. Most have moved over to the board, however myself and others still keep at things on this list as well.

Hi Todd,

Holy crap!! Would you have the FSM's that cover the JDM 1991 Legacy
RS? RS as in EJ20 turbo/intercooled?? I'd give my left testicle
(almost!) to get hold of a set of them.....I've contacted my local
Subaru dealer (no joy) & have even written directly to Subaru in
Japan - got a very polite but negative reply....so I'm almost at my
wits end!! It seems you can get some sort of manual for every Subaru
EXCEPT the RS 2.0 turbo/intercooled model...

Waddya reckon, can you help any??

Cheers,
Rob

All I have is domestic (American).
I think Australia could be the source for your manual.

Not sure about your US Legacy's but the Aus RS Liberty diff ratio is
not so simple...
-The RS use a 3.54 diff at the rear and 3.9 on the front. They use a
1.1 :1 center diff stepper in the gearbox , this gives them mostly
front wheel drive , if you X 3.54 X 1.1 = 3.9 :)

Something I've been meaning to ask you about this. Is it possible to
reverse this FWD bias using different front and rear ratios, or could
you just even it up by using 3.9 at the rear and a 1:1 center diff?

Maybe that will screw up what is essentially a pretty good setup but I
grew up on a diet of RWD and enjoy oversteer more than understeer!

hey , good question. I would prefer the 1:1 centre diff then 3.9 rear so all is the same. Then create a little oversteer with suspension setup. Even as it is my car is quite neutral and can tend to a little over steer only using a 22mm rear bar and upgraded front links to help turn in. It also has WRX 16" wheels with 205/55 16 tyres which also helps compared to the std.

The Aus RS Liberty (approximately a USA Legacy Sport) sounds like it is geared like the 01 USA market WRX.

Side note; That is the reason I think the WRX MT is a good fit to a SVX (also has a 3.54 rear)

Actually it works out to a 3.90 front and rear. The transfer ratio is 1.1 to 1 and the final drive is 3.54 to 1. So 1.1 times 3.545454 (actual ratio) is 3.8999994.

soory Todd - are you refering to my email? if so, yes that is what i wrote.
the fact there is a diff stepper in the box means the front (3.9:1)actually turn faster than the back (3.545:1)but the 'overall' ratio is 3.9.

these ratio's were used in all the Aus WRX as well, up to MY01. (STI different) The MY02 has different gearing now.
