2002 WRX intercooler in to a legacy turbo

Post by subaruracer755@cs.com »

just a quick note... I have a MY 93-96 WRX intercooler with a TD04 turbo on my car right now. adam from Z1 auto said that the 2002 WRX intercooler will fit. Now I have a few questions about that before I tackle that project.

1: how do you plumb the BOV vent hose?
2: I already moved the wire harness and the A/C line below the dogbone. does any thing else have to be moved to fit the larger intercooler?

Thanks!

2002 WRX intercooler in to a legacy turbo

For mine, I rerouted my BOV to under the intercooler next to the turbo. I used a good old sledge to lower the dogbone.haha
Its a pretty snug fit but it works.

2002 WRX intercooler in to a legacy turbo

I am still in the process of fitting my 2002 wrx intercooler in, so
far i've removed the ac line, and rerouted the harness, moved the
coolant tank closer to the drivers side strut tower, and removed the
shroud on the hood. That's really all that need to be moved aside
from small items.

My question is; what/how are you connecting the turbo outlet to the
intercooler input???

I plan to use the stock wrx "y-pipe", and am in search of hosing that
will fill the gap.... it's a tight squeeze

You will have to block off one of the intercooler inlets and run a flex hose from the turbo to the other intercooler inlet. Thats how i did it.

2002 intercooler install...

Post by subaruracer755@cs.com »

well...

with teh MY 93-96 WRX intercooler install, I did it without doing the turbo uprade at the same time. that was a serious mistake. the turbo "clocking" is off. if you want to do this right, get a used turbo from a WRX and fit it up too. it will all bolt up with the exception of the oil line has to be SLOWLY rebent to accept the new mounting points, also the water in and out need to be trimmed, as the in and out point are closer, but thats all... the other issue is there are things that have to move. the wire harness from the TPS/IAC solenoid and the coil pack need to be rerouted to make room for the IC pipe. also I I cut and rerouted that valve thats sticknig out of the crankcase (PCV??). along with that, I moved the ignightor from the dogbone mount to the starter for a better ground. the A/C line and wire harness went under the dogbone. I removed the TB and cut off the water lines for it because the IC hose did not fit.... and rerouted those w

2002 intercooler install...

Hey Mike I have a couple of questions for you.

I have a '92 turbo running 13 PSI and was STRONGLY CONSIDERING buying a
'93-'96 WRX intercooler and doing the install myself but retaining the stock
turbo for a few reasons.

1. Turbos and labor are expensive!
2. I'm not sure if I mentioned this but turbos and labor are expensive!!
3. My understanding is that even though the turbo clocking is off you can use
some radiator hose and connect it fairly easily.
4. Would the power gains even be significant enough to be worth it?
5. Or would the power gains be too much for the stock clutch and 5 spd tranny?
6. How much boost do you run with the WRX turbo?
7. What I really want to know is how did the stock turbo power compare from no
intercooler and 13 PSI to intercooled at 13 PSI?
8. Why are you changing your intercooler? I know that the 2002 one is better
but is it so much better that it's worth it for all that extra money and
trouble of changing your old one?

If anyone else has an opinion to the answers please reply. I really want to
figure out what I should do to safely improve my performance.

2002 intercooler install...

All turbos can put out 25+ PSI. The whole thing
is the smaller the compresser the faster the
boost comes up, and drops off.
Thats my $.02

2002WRX intercooler install

yeah the stock turbo will work but its a SERIOUS micky mouse effort, plus the radiator hoses arent made to withstand 500+ deg temps. i had one on and it blew out after about 4 months of working...

oh BTW you can find used TD04s for about $300 or so... but the new turbo makes the intercooler install go that much easier. plus its a great power adder! 13PSI with NO IC is kinda silly in my eyes, as it heats up the air past efficient density
