principle behind cryo-treating

Post by ssspoon@aol.com »

Principle behind cryo treating is kind of like the opposite of tempering which is the controlled heating and cooling of a metal to give it desired properties of toughness. However with cryogenic treating the material is taken down in temp then brought back up to room temp to achieve an additional measure from that provided by heating and cooling. This treatment for metallics is pretty much reserved for carbon based steels which exhibit phase changes at different temp levels. Aluminum does not undergo the type of granular structure realignment found in certain high alloy steels so many of the aluminum Suby engine parts will not realize a benefit from the process.
