Can the front axles be removed from an AWD 1991 Legacy to make it
rear wheel drive?

Not by just removing the axles. I've been told you can weld certain
pieces of the center diff or something to that nature to make it RWD.

But just removing the front axles will really fubar stuff up.

Note: I was speaking of a manual tranny equipped car. The
automatics....I don't believe there is a safe and reliable way

No.
Well, maybe.
How much do you have to spend? It is not straightforward. The rear
differential is too small to handle lots of torque all by itself.
Automatic or manual trans?
Manual. I've heard of someone welding up the center differential solid then
removing the front inner joints and axels, leaving the outer CV joints there
to hold the front bearings/hubs in place.
Automatic. Has not been done yet. But, I have the idea for a redesigned drop
gear set and clutch pack to make it RWD with front add instead of FWD with
rear add. How much do you have to spend?? (big grin).

Josh, quick question.... do you know if the engine computer from a 1991 Legacy (p/n 22611-AA381 A11-000 R81) will work on my 92 2wd n/a BF? I can get it for around $25.00.

It should.......The engine computers are the same for auto and manual. There's just an identifier for being auto or MT. The auto trannys have their own computer. It is tied into the ECU for certain sensors though.

I don't think you would have a problem, but I can check in the parts book I have, when I get home.

We have done many of these conversions, the diffs are more than
strong enough to cope but the drive axles are not. We take the front
diff, outer cv's and axles out of the front and put a plate over the
hole for the outer cv's.

I can make this change in my auto trans it has TCU, fuse locks the
centre diff instead of making the car FWD.

Dean,

I'm sorry about taking so long to get back to you......I completely forgot.....yeah just kick me.

Anyway. The p/n you listed was a computer that was used only in models manufactured in June of 89.....which were 90 model years.

There are several revisions in computers.....however I still think it will probably work.....are you having any problems that would lead you to believe the ECU is bad?

Josh,
No prob. thanks for the info. My ECU is okay. I saw that one on ebay for low dough, so I thought i'd pick it up. Good thing i asked you, though. The seller said it was a 92 ECU. I did, however, just get a working intake with throttle body and injectors on ebay for $19.95. ought to be good for parts if needed.

do you happen to know the computer part number for my 92?

thanks again,
Dean

What's your manufacture date?

It should be on the aluminum plate at the bottom of the B pillar.

Okay Josh, now it's your turn to kick me... sorry i haven't been able to get back to you... problems at work!

the date of my car's manufacture is 01/92.

Gees, I wish I had a list of all years of Legacy parts which fit my specific car. Does anything like that exist?

actual part # for your ecu is 22611aa931. This part has been superceded by 22611AA933

What fits & works and what was originally in your car are two different things. Basically any time they make a change....no matter how small....they get a new part number.

About the closest thing you can get is an official subaru parts catalogue....which is what I have.
