1993 Impreza 4EAT into a 1993 Legacy

Post by Christopher Chirdon »

Hey gang.

I'm preparing to buy a transmission as it is probably inevitable at this
point that I will need one sometime in the near future (and I have the cash
now.) I want to get a used <70K mile trans, but they're hard to find in the
1990-95 model years that low.

My Car: 1993 Subaru Legacy Auto 4WD
Current trans Code:
TZ102ZA2AA

I have found 2 transmission that look great:

1)
Donor Trans Code:
TZ102ZX3AA
1993 Impreza 4WD
61,100 miles
$350
Please tell me this is compatible. It's a great deal on a low milage
transmission. Would it have anything different I should be concerned about?

2)
Donor Trans Code:
TZ102ZABAA
1996 Legacy 4WD
69,900 miles
$500
>From my local foreign yard (love these guys, always very helpful) but in
their database it is the "6/95 and up" not "5/95 and proir" style. I don't
know if it'll be compatible. It seems that all the 4EAT's are more or less
the same to me (except the really late ones), but I cannot be sure.
Mounting bolts or something?

Now, the impreza transmission looks best to me. I mean, how many times do
you find an auto with only 61,100 for $350? I only looked for the
imprezas for 1993-1994 model years because I read somewhere that they're
the same transmission as the 1990-94 Legacies.

Advice would be appreciated! Please! =)

Hey Christopher,

I say you need to be really careful

It may be the same trans with diff mounting because of Legacy vs Imprezza chassis differences

It may be the same trans with cable or electrical connects in a different spot

It may have different gearing not compatible with your differentials

I don't know but these are some things to consider when you don't use the same part nuimber even if it does bolt right in

One thing you might do is go to your library and check the ADP Hollander Interchange Manual. It will list interchangeable transmissions across all models and years like you are trying for. It's a big green book about 6 inches thick and easy to spot when you know what you're looking for.

In my words of wisdom about your trans swap I said one thing you might do is go to your library and check the ADP Hollander Interchange Manual. It will list interchangeable transmissions across all models and years like you are trying for.

Forgot to include Southern Tier Auto Recycling (S.T.A.R)

Their online inventory search engine uses the ADP Hollander Interchange as a foundation, so you might be able to get a line on what will work from other models and model years.

However that only works for various items in inventory, so time with the real manual is the best assurance.
