I've got a copy of the 0.05 version here.

Hopefully someone has a copy of his website...

Will this scan tool work for my N/A 92? I'd like to look at ignition timing and coolant temp values and such to make sure all the sensors are working to see if I can figure out this mediocre mpg.

This is freakin' awesome. I've got the parts and info, just been too lazy to build this. Its time I got myself into gear and did it! I'm glad this is stickied! I'll post up once I get mine done.

I built this cable and burned the v0.05 version on a CD. It works great with my Dell Latitude CPi, but not with my IBM T42. It seems to me that others (IronMonkeyL255) have experienced the same problems with some IBM laptops. With my T42 it would error with Invalid ROM ID as it returned different invalid ROM ID values. When I shorted the TX and RX pins I was consistently returned values 00.FF.FF. Next I tried the older Dell Laptop which worked great, but has a dead battery. It worked awesome, but can't do much until I get either a working battery, inverter or a really really long extension cord.

Instead of throwing more money at an old laptop, I think I am going to build this cable:

http://www.alcyone.org.uk/ssm/usbhowto.pdf

I am ordering it here:

http://apple.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop ... egoryID=47

And try it with this software:

http://www.vwrx.com/index.php?pg=selectmonitor

If it works I'll let you know.

I am not sure where exactly to post this, so I will start here.

I have an '91 EJ22 in my VW Vanagon. Using Vikash's B10 Scan Tool, it shows all parameters are in good order except for the Load. During hot idle (750 rpms) the load value is in the high 30's to lower 40's. When climbing a mtn pass the load value goes up to 90+ From what I understand the load value should be in the teens or maybe low 20's at hot idle.

Any ideas what I might look for to get this back into range?

What exactly is the load value anyway?

Many thanks!

Your load values look fine. Please see this thread.

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... light=scan

Load values are just a calculated value from the ECU , and are not scaled to 100%. I wouldn't put too much concern into what the load values are.

There is a pdf called "diagnostics", here... http://cid-4ca3c3459aaa7f7f.skydrive.li ... sa=2352109 It describes what the readings should be and what it takes for a trouble code to be set. Might help.

You mean this one?

What year & model subaru is this applicable to?

Thanks

Thanks to Josh, the page is back up at a new address. I'll see if I can figure out why 0.06 isn't working so much of the time.

I was able to get the vwrx software to work, but it only works reliably reading one value at a time. If you understand how the protocol works it makes sense that multiple values does not work well. Vikash's software is more complete in that it shows more parameters. I guess I will need to build a serial port cable.

I found a Scoche SU02B cable on ebay for less than $10 shipped.

If I had to do it again, I would use this part from SparkFun for the USB to 5V serial.

vrg3: Made any headway into troubleshooting why 0.06 doesn't work often? Also any idea why with some laptops, it flat out doesn't work at all? For example, I'm borrowing a hp nx7010. Tried b10scan 0.05 and 0.06 and neither work with it. Tried changing the parallel port settings in the BIOS too (standard, bidirectional, epp, ecp) and that didn't help either. Was using a Win98 boot disk. Ideas?

Also the 0.06 source code download on your new site/josh's doesn't work.

Looked, and it is not on the server. I'd suggest emailing Vikash and see if he has it.

They literally stole Vikash's code without asking. He's commented on it before, not sure where. Vikash said they messed up a few parameters.

How long did you wait? It's been a while since I used it but I remember it certainly wasn't instant. Check continuity on your cable to be sure you wired it right.

Could try recopying the software to the disk. Not sure what else it could be...

Hey Vrg, I've been reading up on this and I'd really like to try it out, but the problem is that my laptop doesn't have either of the connectors to hook it up to.

My laptop has only the blue printer port shown here:

I was just wondering if you could draw up a wiring diagram for me to fit this port.

Thanks.

That blue port is to attach a monitor. You'll need an older laptop with the printer port like on the left there, there's no easy way around it. These should be between free and cheap at this point, and will likely have dead batteries, so a power inverter and power cord will likely be required; that's what I did.

The wiring for using the serial port (blue one) is on this site..... you'll have stuff to add to the wires tho

Ahh that sucks. Oh well, if I really want to do this I'll look for something older, thanks for the input.

That is different then the one on my laptop, apparently it won't work.
