Gauge wiring question.

Post by snowboarded »

Where should I tie in the lighting wires for my gauges so that I can actually see how much I'm boosting at night time?

Use one of the dash lights. The ashtray light is a good one.

I haven't been in that part of the dash in a while...
I am guessing that i should just trace the line that goes to the bulb in the ashtray light?

You can use the radio power wire, through it will be lit all the time...you can run a wire to your parking lights. Thats what I did...but I think I might retrace back to the ashtray light. makes things look neater in the engine bay.

If you use the ashtray light, the gage will dim with your dash lights also.

Really? That is pimp. Not sure how handy that is, but having the power to do so is really cool.

It's super handy not to be blinded by your gauges at night. :)

You can also use the two illumination wires from the radio:

If your gauge uses its chassis to ground the illumination circuit you'd have to build one of these:

hey Vikash. Maybe you could help me with my gauge problem.

I hooked up my oil pressure/temp gauges up a few weeks ago. Everything works fine and I tapped into the stock radio lighting circuit (single wire). The dimmer switch "works" but in opposite...
when the lights in the dash go dim the gauges go brighter!!

Seeing as the gauges run single grounds (that I ran dedicated to the body), I can't imagine that I wired it in wrong... polarity-wise.

Both the switched power and constant 12v were also checked with a voltmeter prior to installation against a known ground so I know they're hooked up correctly.

Finally, both the radio illumination/dash lighting and the gauges are LEDs, if that changes anything.

Thanks in advance!

Well I can now read my boost and water temp gauge (even tho it doesn't do me any good until i hook up the sensor) at night.
I see what you mean about the dimming, it is nice that I can choose the brightness on the gauges.
It didn't take all that long to do, seing as how this was my first time doing any kind of interior wiring, aside from speakers.
Thanks for the help.

I tapped the ashtray light for my boot gauge, too.

Jason - Read the second page I linked to; I believe it's 100% applicable to your situation. :)
