Trouble codes

Post by Tleg93 »

Hey legcen, it's been a little while. My SS is running like poo. I've been having some codes pop up and wondered what you guys thought. The car starts to sputter around 2500 on up to 3600 rpm's. It feels like it just dies for a second or two and can be really hard to accelerate unless I downshift. Occasionally I also get some heavy knock. Anyway, I pulled the codes and this is what came up:

23 - Air Flow sensor (abnormal voltage)
32 - O2 Sensor reading
41 - A/F leaning control
45 - Atmosphereic pressure sens
22- Knock Sens
31 - Can't recall this one at the moment

I'm suspecting the MAP sensor but I just wondered if anyone had a similar set of codes. Anyone have a MAF and MAP sensor? :)

Cool, I may take you up on that but first I'd like to do a little troubleshoting. Is there nobody out there who has an opinion or am I just getting the silent treatment, lol? How can you test the MAP sensor? How can you check the MAF sensor? I thought about trying to run with the MAP disconnected to see if it made no difference guessing that if it didn't then that may likely be the issue.

yeah you could try that. also, if you're getting a maf code go get some MAF cleaner at your local autoparts store. and use that (Do not use anything else but maf cleaner)

you have to have some sort of vacuum pump to test the map sensor (Get a haynes or chilton manual) and keep that in your car @ all times. the maf i cannot remember how to test. search the forum for some info. josh has a bunch of it on his website.

I would suggest the MAF sensor.

The MAP sensor really doesn't do much in terms of controling fueling.

Thanks for the tips. Matt (legacyej22t) told me that I can't use an NA MAF in my car. I believe him but I was hoping it might work temporarily or at least to test it. I haven't tried anything yet but I'm going to have to soon it's running very lean at times.

You can use a 90-91 non-turbo MAF in your car. It's the same aluminum Hitachi MAF that's in the turbo engine.

Thanks Josh. Someone told me I couldn't but I swore I remembered hearing you could use one.

Ok, the local subaru shop is being retarted about this which is normal for them. They are asking for a part number. Now, I told them I need a MAF off of a 90-91 NA legacy. She said "oh you can't use that!" to which I said that I had it on good information that you could. So she's asking for a part number. I looked all over the place on the web and can't find a part number. Found plenty of SKU's but nothing concrete. SO...does anyone have a part number off one of these babies so I can feed the troll what it wants to let me pass. Sorry but this infuriates me! I should be able to tell this...lady that I need it for a science experiment and have that be enough. She thinks I'm an idiot because one time I took my car to be repaired and her 'ace' mechanic forgot to reconnect the valve cover/pcv hoses and I called her out on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

Just an FYI, lots of part #'s here,
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=631

All the part #'s here,
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=30531

Also to clarify,

MAF 22680AA160 is the black plastic JECS MAF and is found only on the non-turbo cars

MAF 22680AA170 is the aluminum Hitachi MAF and is found on the turbo cars, but is also found on the 90-91 non-turbos as mentioend above.

Thanks again Josh. I ran the car with the MAP unplugged just to see if it made a difference and it ran the way it's been running, bogging down at 2.5k to 3k rpm. I don't know if the means the sensor is opened or not. I'm going to dig for the schematics, it's time to get my troubleshooting on. I'm going to remove and clean the MAF today. Wish me luck. I'm getting huge backfires in the throttle body area so something needs to be done before the damage is permanent.

Ok, a big duh here. I finally removed the maf and found it caked with black soot from my K&N probably... But I cleaned it with some MAF cleaner and now it runs properly. It's fixed! yay!
