No CEL's on a tuned car?

Post by thewaterboy »

My friend's TD04 swapped SS doesnt display any codes when the under dash connectors are hooked up, but it will have a CEL at partial throttle around 2500-3000rpms. It will also drop really low at idle and run really rough... Anybody have any insight? We are going to clean the throttle body and MAF before throwing any parts around. I was thinking about testing the TPS and IACV for voltage and resistance as well

EDIT

We also don't currently know if the car has any sort of tuning. It hits fuel cut at 5500rpms, and has the pink injectors.

I'm pretty certain none of the available tuning options would have disabled CELs except for maybe the boost control solenoid. And with stock pink injectors its very unlikely the car has a tune anyways.

Does the CEL flash steadily to indicate that there's no codes, or does it not flash at all? You sure you've got the right connectors plugged in?

If you're not able to boost all the way, there's something keeping the ECU in limp mode. Have you tried resetting the ECU memory?

It comes and goes, but doesn't flash. Im sure I've got the right connectors hooked up, provided they are the same for an SS as well as an NA wagon.

We haven't reset the ECU yet. I'll be hanging out with him again on Tuesday to work on his car. Today was my wagon's day haha.

We did, however, replace the old NGK BKR6EGP's with 4 fresh BKR6E-11's gapped to .040 as a baseline. I had to fiddle with the same plugs in my Audi, which didn't like anything over 0.038 or under 0.036.

This car is a good learning experience for him though!

Does he have a RobTune? The CEL could just be the knock light flickering.

After i got my borla rep on last night, we did a couple of pulls. My NA wagon walked away from his SS every time. That poor car needs some attention. In my mind, if it had the TD04+MBC+front mount it should at least have bigger injectors/FPRs and a tune. Do you guys change to bigger MAF housings to compliment bigger turbos at all? Throttle body swaps?

No on the maf, without an ecu that supports it. And on a boosted car, the TB isn't something that 99.5% mess with. NA (and on other makes) is another story.

Yeah I had a tune that called for a 3" (2.75 was stock) MAF and a VR6 TB as well for my A4, it ran like piss before I got the required parts. Ill send him a link on how to reset the ECU and see how it works

You can't tune the stock ECU.
