Fusebox Relocate?

Post by Sublimejoe »

I searched around and couldn't find anything, so forgive me if this thread already exists!

My bay is finally painted and before I put a motor in I would like to relocate my fusebox and battery. For the fusebox I am thinking I will put it inside of the glove compartment, and it looks like it shouldn't be very hard.

Has anyone done this before and have any suggestions or tips? The car is a RHD 1993 Legacy Wagon and I am putting in an EJ20g and five speed manual trans.

That is putting a lot of higher amperage wires inside the passenger compartment that Subaru intended to be nowhere near passengers or running through sheet metal penetrations that could be compromised in a crash. With the fuses between the battery and the firewall openings the circuit is still protected if the harness shorts in a crash. If the fuse is now inside the passenger compartment the fuse will not protect as designed if the wire shorts out between the battery and fuse.

Other than the work rerouting or lengthening the various circuits, it's pretty straight forward work.

Hmmm, I didn't really think about it that way. What about if I put it inside of some sort of box or something in the trunk? I just want it out of the way.

If you put both the battery and the fuses in the trunk, they are still in close proximity to each other - as intended.

^ I agree. It's way more wiring and time than its actually worth.

Maybe not more than it's worth. Getting the battery and fusebox out of the bay cleans it up so much. I'm not going to attempt it myself though so if I can't find someone to do it for me they will just stay I guess

Im talking with my friend who does wiring about moving the fuse box for me. I searched wiring diagrams but I can't seem to find anything that shows the wires going into the box. Anyone have anything?

I found this, in theory it should be as easy as extending the wires right?

For each relay, there will be 4 wires, each fuse only 2. Unbolt the box and lift it up and youll kind of have an idea. whats sucks is the fender will need to be removed, wiring looms opened up and worst, you'll need to think of how you are going to run it back thete nice and tidy. You'll probably also need to increase the gauge size to account for the longer distance.

Bumping this thread. Anyone know if I can buy loose connectors, so I can make an extension harness between the harness and new fusebox location? I don't want to buy a harness just to cut the connectors off and toss it... But I will if I have to muhahahahaha
