Airbag light diagnosis

Post by xKriostar »

I just recently finished a JDM EJ205 swap into my 92 Legacy Sedan. Wiring was merge by IWire and it runs great. My check engine light is normally off, my ABS light is currently on, but it is because of the ABS Sensors on my axles (Since I have a JDM 5 speed as well). I am fixing that next week with new sensors.

My biggest annoyance right now is that my airbag light is on. I have had a hard time finding information online on how to diagnose or reset it. I tried messing with the 6 pin connector and the single ground wire under the dash (Next to the black ECU read connectors) but none of them had any effect on the light or car. I believe my issue is that when I was pulling the wiring harness, I had just gotten it out and then noticed I forgot the windows down and needed them up to park the car on the street. I plugged in just enough of the wiring harness to be able to get the windows up. During this, I think I might have had something for the airbag system unplugged which caused the light. I heard that the airbag light will stay on until it is reset but that could also be false due to the lack of information I was able to find on these cars. I really just want the airbag light at this point, I'd take out the bulb but it's not a removal bulb, it's built into the dash.

Anybody have any tips? Maybe there was something I didn't connect when putting the wiring harness back in, or maybe I do just simply need to reset it and I'm doing it wrong.

So should I have two ground connectors under the dash? I only have one and don't see any cut wires or anything that could be another. It also does nothing when I plug it into the diagnostic connector

No, there should be one diagnostic connector and a ground pin/wire. The diagnostic connector should be a flat U shaped connector like in the picture for the first link. If you can't find the ground pin/wire you can get a spare wire, connect it to a ground point, and then to the appropriate pin on that diagnostic connector.

Are you performing the test with the key in the "ON" position but engine not running?

Yes, I am doing it with the ignition turned to on. I tried using another wire connected to a ground but also got no results, the light just stays on and nothing happens.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for more then 10 minutes, reconnecting, and then seeing if the light is still on?

Hmm...

Was there a time when the light was ever not on or was it on even before you put the windows up? Only thing I can think of is maybe something in the airbag ECU got fried and isn't working properly, but without doing some more diagnostic work that may be premature thinking.

It was always off until I swapped the engine. I didn't see it when I put the windows up since the dash wasn't in.

same thing in my 94, I swapped out the airbag ECU, nothing. It was on before I swapped the clockspring and I was hoping that would fix, had the dealer install it. Took care of all the problems except the airbag light

Out of curiosity, did you try disconnecting the battery?

I Did NOT! I will try it. Thanks Josh. BTW, I have installed the venomaire and absolutely love it. Mileage is up if I keep my foot out of it.
