Td05h 16g 20g questins for people who know about TD turbos

Post by gtlegacy »

Heya,

i have a Td05h 16g turbo from a wrx sti i think v2 on my legacy at the moment

i pulled it off for an upgraded comp wheel

the number i have on the turbo compressor wheel is c1 /_\4L which according to the guy i got it from is 16g is that right?

also the number of the other wheel i have which is meant to be 20g is a7 /_\ 4L is that right?

also the thing that got me was to put a 20g in a 16g's place isnt it meant to be machined out on the inside of the cover which the cover i got with ?20g? hasnt been

Not sure what you are trying to say/ask, but you can put a 20G wheel/housing on a 16G no problem.

The backplate may have to be machined for everything to fit (flat vs superbacked wheels) & you should have everything balanced but its not too expensive to do.

I'm having a TD06-20G / TD05 Hybird built right now myself.

I think he's asking if the factory 16g compressor housing needs to be machined?

I'm almost positive that the backplate and the 16g housing would both need to be machined to fit the 20g wheel.

ok sorry guys if i confused you a bit

do those numbers match up to anything?

and i was just seeing if housing and turbo bits were meant to be machined to fit because if they dont then i dont ahve a 20g do i
? because it allready fits with no machining

My TD05 had to be machined but I used a TD05-14B off an Eclipse as a donor (which I believe is flatbacked) since they are cheap, share the same turbine wheel with the TD05-16G, & fit right into Subaru TD05 e-housings.

I'm having the turbo clipped & fresh oil seals put in while everything is apart....

I figured this was the cheapest way to get a 650cfm turbo using parts that were just laying around....

I think the only 16G that will not have to be machined may the EVO III 16G as they should be superbacked - ? if the Big 16G is superbacked....

While we're on the topic...does anyone know how strong the internal wastegate actuator is on a JDM "standard" TD05-16g? i.e. how much boost you can run before you get wastegate flutter?

...trying to decide if external wastegate is in order.

Thanks in advance, ~AW

You'd prolly be close to the choke line or otherwise out the efficiency range of the turbo before having to worry about wastegate flutter.

I've held 20psi on a ported 16G - no issues with the actuator...

Cool. If I get my car chipped by Revtronix I'll probably be running +20 and into uncharted territory for actuator...good to know stock will take it that far tho.

RE: TD05 specs, I've found this site to be fascinating.

Scroll down for flow rate comparisons for TD05-16G and 20G.

Also the guys at Deadbolt engineering are very helpful if you call them.

For the sake of keeping folks pistons in 1 piece more fuel will be needed to run 20psi, but the actuator will not care....

I would suggest injectors, fuel pump, and an intercooler to support the 16G. Of course with bigger injectors, engine management like a PP6 or similar is recommended. That is a good price assuming it's in good shape, maybe buy it and put in on the shelf until you've got supporting mods? I've got one on my shelf at the moment :)
