EJ20G question...

Okay I just bought a Legacy SS. I will be doing a full thread for that shortly. It was Gary's (aka All_Talk) and he did an absolute tremendous job on this car.

Heres a pic for the curious...

Anyways, the car has the early style legacy ej20g with the stock ej22t injectors, ecu, and harness. It has a wrx intercooler, mbc, diy fcd, and thats about it. A head gasket is weeping so I am going to get the headgaskets done soon.

My questions are:

1) what is stock boost for the ej20g?

2) what is safe range for me to go with boost with this setup?

3) What turbo is on the early legacy ej20g?

4) What material of headgasket is recommended?

5) The ej20g is rated at 200 hp, right? Am i losing a significant amount of power with the usdm legacy turbo injectors/ecu?

I know with some of these questions I have got some answers to with searching. And believe me I have been searching for weeks before I created this. I created this for clear clarification mostly.

Thanks for the help guys.

If it's the stock turbo still, it's probably a VF8 or VF10. The VF10 is comparable to our VF11 and came on all wagons and auto sedans with the EJ20G. The VF8 was on manual sedans and was a little bigger, but not as good as a VF12 or TD05.

With a VF11 or TD04 you would be safe up to 12-13 on the stock injectors/MAF. With a better turbo such as a TD05 you would probably want to limit yourself to 9-10 or you will max the MAF out and the injectors go static open.

I think stock boost on an early Legacy EJ20G was around 10psi.

Stock power on a 5-speed Legacy EJ20G IIRC was 167kW, which translates to about 227 hp. The autos were about 200hp.

Thanks for the info Alphius. Thats a great start.

You should get a bottle of subatu coolant conditioner. I just recently had an external head gasket leak. Bottle of that stuff fixed it in one day and its been about 3-4 weeks and hasn't leaked a drop since. It was amazing. Worth a shot. Only cost less than $3.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Only Questions left...

1) Should i worry about a certain material of headgasket?

2) How much power am i losing with the ej22t injectors and ecu?

3) Is the stock turbo a vf8/10 as Alphius stated?

1. EJ20G headgasket part number: 11044AA355 and it is available from subarugenuineparts.com and 1stsubaruparts.com
You could use an EJ22T gasket as well, but that would have a slightly larger bore.
There's an EJ20K reinforced gasket part number 11044AA463 but I can't find it on any Subaru dealer site.

2. The big loss is in the timing, there's no way to know for sure but I would guess you are probably down 20-30 hp at an equivalent boost level from an EJ20G ECU. Of course, the stock EJ20G ECU won't work on our comparatively crappy gas here, so your safest and most powerful bet is to get a RobTuned ECU. Check the threads on here for details on that setup. You will need a different MAF and injectors.

3. The stock turbo if everything you said was true is either a VF8 or VF10. I suppose if you're looking for someone else to confirm what I said then this doesn't help, but those are the only two turbos that came on a Legacy RS or GT. VF10 on all wagons and auto sedans, VF8 on 5-speed sedans.

VF8 in my 1990 Legacy RS-RA you get about 10-11psi
the injectors look like 440's and its a bone stock original ej20g
