TD04 and 05' TMIC

Post by robertpaige »

Okay so here's the sitch. My stock VF is completely blown out. I'm buying a 05' TD04 and TMIC with stock y-pipe and WRX BPV. I have a few questions that I couldn't find a straight answer for.

Do I NEED a BOV or can I run stock BPV? Or none?
And do I HAVE to have the TMIC or can I run stock boost and watercooled on the TD04 until I can install the intercooler?

I know the 05' is gonna take some smashing to get to fit but it's only 200 for a good turbo and intercooler.

Sorry if this has even answered.. I tried to search and couldn't find an exact answer. Plus I'm on my stupid phone browser cause I'm in the middle of moving and don't have Internet at the new place. :(

I need some help!!

You do need some sort of BPV/BOV with your turbo. I personally run a ej22t/ej20g style BPV (a Mk. III Supra Turbo one), with a custom triangular plate coming off the WRX TMIC where the new style bpv used to go. I couldn't use the BPV that came with the TMIC due to it hitting stuff coming off the intake manifold (the throttle and cruise control cables?)

Here are a couple of quotes about aftermarket BOV's:

"your car will feel more laggy during shifts while building up boost again. " (http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/new-membe ... rbo-2.html)

Can't find the 2nd one I was looking for. Will edit later. It came from the site that tested all those subaru tmic's.

The intercooler came with the stock WRX BPV so that's cool. It had the stock y-pipe, I guess if it doesn't fit ill go buy a Samco pipe. I am gonna try the install tomorrow and see how it goes.

What I need to know is what hose connects to the BPV on the intercooler? Where is the stock Legacy BPV located?

The stock legacy BPV is located under the turbo oulet piping that dumps into the TB. It's underneath that piping.

Can I test my stock BPV? I think that might be why I'm not boosting. When I accelerate it sounds like just a bunch of air leaking. Like a constant swooooosh. I mean it's not a big deal since I am gonna buy a BOV anyways..

So today I ordered the 2.25" 90 inlet for the TD04 from Silicone Intakes and some vacuum hose. I also bought a boost gauge today. Only need a couple more things to get started on this install!

With the stock BPV out of the car you should not be able to blow through the valve.

So I broke the BPV vacuum nipple off the BPV in the hose. Then managed to break the hose from the intake.... So now I have to go buy a vacuum hose but I'm not sure what to do about the BPV. I have the stock WRX BPV is there any way to hook that up? Or just run a BOV for the time being? I'm pretty screwed here... Idk what I should do.

If you have a stock WRX BPV, I don't see why that wouldn't work. You just may need to modify the piping setup so it can be used.

Okay so the one I broke is on the left and the WRX BPV is on the right..

Image

How am I gonna get it to work? Since the bottom of the BPV is just open, will it just act like an atmospheric BOV? Almost just thinking about mounting up my intercooler to the VF11 at this point..

What I want to know is what would happen if I left that hole open where the nipple broke off on the BPV and then just plugged that vac line?

You'd need to make a custom plate or something so you could use the stock WRX BPV, or put on the intercooler.

You'd be better off just getting another stock BPV.

Thanks to fireman2101 i'll be running the stock BPV, and then probably still using it when I put my intercooler on, I got one of those BPV adapter plats that mount the intercooler.

Is it safe to run the TD04 without the intercooler on stock boost? Like just swapping it in place of my VF11? I need more parts for the intercooler but I have everything I need to put in the TD04.

The outlet on the td04 is the wrong angle, and won't fit the stock charge pipe. You could get some silicone couplings and reducers to make it work, but that's more time to accumulate parts.

To answer your question about the turbo, yes it's safe to run the TD04 without an intercooler on stock boost.

Got the WRX BPV plumbed and fitted today. Here is a quick shot of it. Don't mind the foil and RTV all over the place haha. It will all be cleaned up tomorrow. Hope it all works out..

My only comment would be to make sure the hose you're using is rated for the potential pressure from the turbo. It's hard to make out, but it appears that there is some accordian style hose there and I'm not sure if or what kind of pressure rating it has.

Josh, that hose is just a random radiator hose I picked up, it was the only hose with the correct diameter that I could get to fit on the BPV. I'm hoping it won't cause any issues. I'm gonna fire it up in a little bit this morning and I'll report back with anything good or bad going on

Ok, well if it's a radiator hose, it should be ok for the pressure.

Well all is good and running. I forgot to plug in the plug right above the PCV hose, I think it's the IAC. Scared me at first, started it up and CEL came on and it wanted to die, but then realized I didn't have that plug plugged in, ha! Plugged it in and it was good. At first the idle was really low, but then it got better. These were my readings at warm temp idle, and after a spirited run.

You can, but your car won't run that great. Depends on how much boost you're planning on running with. If you want the cool sound, it'll work. If you want stability and performance that stick with your BPV or get a WRX BPV and adapter.

You can use the bov. I had a blitz on my old one and had an adapter plate in a triangular shape to bolt the bov to that. Robertlxii, did you get the swap done then, with out me coming down? Congrats man! Pretty easy once you start diggin into it.
